Despite Starry Cast, ‘Gotti: In The Shadow Of My Father’ Now On Hold Due To Lack Of Cash

Look at that picture above, so full of hope and promise, but also a good indication early on of a project that always seemed too good to be true. That snap was taken at a press conference this spring formally announcing "Gotti: Three Generations" (later retitled to "Gotti: In The Shadow Of My Father") and yes, that's Lindsay Lohan. And surprise, surprise she didn't end up getting a role in the picture, but it was a pretty good way to drum up publicity for the movie. But that wasn't the only hurdle the film faced. Original director Nick Cassavetes bailed only to be replaced by Barry Levinson. But the real indication something must have been up was when Joe Pesci sued the producers this summer claiming that not only did they change the role he was going to play, they were giving him a reduced salary as well. Money problems? It appears that was the case.

Well, if it worked once, why not see if it'll work again? Chazz Palminteri is the latest to join the increasingly oddball cast of "Gotti: In The Shadow Of My Father" playing a character he already portrayed ten years ago.

Well, despite a lawsuit from Joe Pesci, movement continues on the indie production of "Gotti: In the Shadow of My Father," as the film has added another strong actor to the improbably impressive cast.

We've always been a little skeptical about the gestating "Gotti: In the Shadow of My Father" if only because the producers, Fiore Films, have somewhat improbably lined up a cast that includes John Travolta, Al Pacino and Joe Pesci despite the fact their only other produced film to date is this. Where were they getting the kind of scratch to get this big stars into play? How would the filmmakers whose only movie thus far is straight-to-video National Lampoon's comedy manage to make something solid of a film about one of the most notorious gangsters of our generation? Why did they use Lindsay Lohan to drum up press for the film by pretending they were going to cast her? Well, to hear it from Pesci, empty promises seem to be par for the course with these guys.

Earlier this year there was all kinds of hoopla surrounding the gestating John Gotti biopic, mostly because independent producers Fiore Films somehow managed to score John Travolta, Al Pacino and Joe Pesci for the film with none other than Barry Levinson directing (who stepped in for Nick Cassavetes who bailed on the project to focus on his now legally troubled flick "Yellow"). Well, it's been nearly two months since we last heard anything, but believe it or not, the movie is indeed moving forward.

Levinson Talks Prospect Of Helming Mob Epic 'Gotti: Three Generations'For someone who's almost incontestably one of the greatest living American novelists (there will always be naysayers...) Philip Roth has never fared well on the big screen. "Goodbye, Columbus is mostly forgotten, but fairly decent, but "Portnoy's Complaint," "The Human Stain" and "Elegy" (an adaptation of "The Dying Animal") were all disasters of varying degrees, despite excellent source material. But Hollywood ain't done with Roth yet, with news breaking that a veteran director and star, fresh off a recent success together, are joining forces again to adapt a recent work from the author.

Ok, we have to admit, the indie gangster biopic "Gotti: Three Generations" always seemed more like an expensive publicity stunt than an actual movie to us, but full respect to Fiore Films, they now have our full attention as there has been some tremendous movement on the picture over the past couple of days.

With Barry Levinson now on board to direct "Gotti: Three Generations" replacing the recently departed Nick Cassavetes, casting continues on the crime family saga, and it's getting strange.

With Nick Cassavetes vacating the director's chair, a chill went through Hollywood as everybody from studio executives to janitors wondered who would come to man the ship on the gangster story that must be told. Well, everyone will sleep easier tonight as a replacement has been found.

Update: Marc Fiore has now told TMZ that Lindsay Lohan is back in "Gotti: Three Generations," circumventing her management to personally plead her case with the producer. Not only that, she upped her part to John Gotti's daughter-in-law, Kim.
