If we had to make a list of older stars whose work has been consistently interesting and watchable (for the most part) throughout their careers, there’s no question that Tommy Lee Jones and Meryl Streep would certainly be near the top. Both willing to step into more dangerous territory later in their career with more challenging fare like “No Country for Old Men” or “Adaptation,” but also not afraid to go big in Hollywood cash-ins like “Men In Black” or “Mamma Mia,” both stars continue to delight audiences long after the expiration dates of many of their contemporaries.

With the beloved Meryl Streep proving with "Mammia Mia!" and "Julie & Julia" that she can dominate summer just as well as she can the awards season, this August Columbia Pictures is hoping that the actress can once again get women out to theaters with "Hope Springs" (formerly known as "Great Hope Springs").

Hollywood, generally speaking, does not care about old people. Despite the teen audience seemingly flagging, the studios continue to chase that precious 13-25 demographic, leaving only a handful of pictures to cater for those over 50. But every so often, older audiences will turn up in droves -- think "The King's Speech" or "True Grit" or "Gran Torino" or "Julie & Julia." It's a hard crowd to draw -- they won't simply turn up every opening weekend, which is one of the reasons executives never quite know what to do for them. But if we do know two things about that demographic, it's that they love Meryl Streep and they love Clint Eastwood.

The 1990s saw Tommy Lee Jones suddenly become one of the more unlikely A-listers out there. His Oscar-winning antagonist in "The Fugitive" placed the actor firmly in demand in big budget projects such as "Men in Black," "Volcano" and "Batman Forever," as well as a series of not-particularly good procedural programmers like "Double Jeopardy," "Rules of Engagement" and "The Hunted." But the humiliation of 2005's cheerleader comedy "Man of the House," which would be a nadir of anyone's career, let alone someone with fine work stretching back 40-odd years, seemed to change things.
