Ranked: Movies Of 1984
Friday, June 8th, 1984 was quite a day. Homosexuality was decriminalized in New South Wales, Australia; an F5 tornado struck the town of Barnevald, Wisconsin, USA, destroying 90% of it; President Ronald Reagan attended a summit in London; the Celtics beat the Lakers 121-103 to take a 3-2 lead in the NBA finals; TV gameshow “Press Your Luck” paid out the biggest ever jackpot (to that point) of $110,000 to one Michael Larson who had figured out how to beat the system; and Cyndi Lauper’s “Time After Time” was poised to knock Deniece Williams’ “Let’s Hear It For The Boy” off the Billboard Charts number one spot. Oh, and modern classics “Ghostbusters” and “Gremlins” were both released.

Gremlins
30 years ago, Steven Spielberg—still some way from his 38th birthday—was at the height of his power. He had invented the modern blockbuster in “Jaws,” re-invented the old-school adventure in “Raiders of the Lost Ark,” perfected the family movie in “E.T.,” united all these things for “Close Encounters of the Third Kind,” and founded an immensely powerful production company, funding and steering innovative, horror-flavored projects like “Poltergeist” and “The Twilight Zone”—and something called “Gremlins,” a project Spielberg had bought and then given to a promising director of comic horror called Joe Dante, because the maestro himself was busy with “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom.”

Fight Club
Especially as projection booths worldwide are being ported over to humming boxes of digital data, it may hold some value to remember that there were once live people up there calling the shots. New York photographer Joseph O. Holmes has been tracking this shift closely, and in 2012 he finished a photo series on just that -- the city’s projectionists and their workplaces. Those snapshots are currently on view at New York’s Museum of the Moving Image, but Holmes also completed a short film tribute to the projection booth that you can check out now.

1984 was a pretty insane year for movies with "Beverly Hills Cop," "Ghostbusters," "Indiana Jones And The Temple Of Doom," "Police Academy" and more all landing in theaters. But few matched the pure zaniness of Joe Dante's "Gremlins." It took the idea of getting a new pet and turned it into something truly monstrous, and moreover, it brought together the B-movie leanings of Joe Dante inside the blockbuster structure of producer Steven Spielberg, creating something truly memorable. So let's take a little trip down memory lane...

You might have forgotten or blocked it from your memory, but earlier this year news surfaced that Warner Bros. was in negotiations with Steven Spielberg's Amblin Entertainment to reboot "Gremlins." Why? Just because and probably because it's a property that people know and has yet to be scorched and fully exploited for all its franchise potential. Rumors of a "Gremlins 3" had been floating for years and Joe Dante shot them down, but at any rate, it looks like they're just gonna go down the do-over route, though the name they've enlisted to help produce doesn't exactly inspire confidence.

Oh please, let's not pretend be shocked anymore. Yet another beloved childhood movie that many grew up with and was near and dear to our hearts is being tossed into the possible reboot/remake mill. Just don't feed it after midnight.

June 8th, 1984 was a great day for movie nerds, particularly those with an affection for special effects, scares and belly laughs. Not only did they get "Ghostbusters" in theaters that day (as we've already looked at, but they also got "Gremlins," the subversive PG-rated horror-comedy from the A-list trio of writer Chris Columbus, director Joe Dante and producer Steven Spielberg.
