The Canyons Lindsay Lohan
With Hollywood set to unveil the Oscar nominations tomorrow morning—the same day as the Sundance Film Festival kicks off—the folks at the Razzies are doing their annual thing of thumbing their nose at the industry by unveiling their nominations of the year's worst. And big shock here is really how tame most of their targets are this year.

Sometimes it's hard to tell if the buzz around an actor or actress exists simply among entertainment writers or has currency in the real world. And so, when Melissa McCarthy broke out in 2011 with "Bridesmaids," earning an Oscar nomination (among other accolades) it remained to be seen if that success would be a springboard to future hits. And indeed it was.

2013: Worst Fillms Of The Year
You know us, dear reader, we’re on the side of the angels. Most days of the year will find us, Pollyanna-like, looking on the bright side of the movie world, championing the weak, giving succour to the neglected and finding the silver lining to every cinematic cloud. But not today. Today, screw that, we’re giving vent to the bile that has built up over a twelvemonth of diligent moviegoing and letting it rip on those movies that just fucking suck. And while we still believe in reasoned argument and persuasive rhetoric to get our points across, forgive us if we occasionally lapse into hyperbole here, and remember that these are films that take two-odd hours of our (and your) lives and brainspace, that could be given to something much more deserving,, rewarding and wondrous, and serve us mulch instead. I mean, Bergman’s “Autumn Sonata” is roughly the same length as Sandler’s “Grown Ups 2.”

The Counselor
First there was the best....and now the comes the worst. And while Mary Pols stoked internet fury last year by naming "Cloud Atlas" the top stinker of 2012, hardly anyone will argue with her choice this year: "Grown Ups 2." And in fact the rest of her list is pretty debate proof.

Despicable Me 2
For the past few weeks, there has been a lot of hubbub around the Internet about whether Guillermo del Toro's "Pacific Rim" could withstand Adam Sandler's "Grown Ups 2." Early tracking reports showed del Toro's monster movie trailing behind Sandler's comic reunion rehash. In response, critics have been up in arms, worried about the general public's questionable taste and wondering what this would mean for future of film. If "Grown Ups 2" won and "Pacific Rim" lost, the argument was that this would result in the film industry becoming even more entrenched in sure-fire franchises rather than risking money on larger-scope original concepts.

Comedy sequels: best, worst, weird
With the release of “Grown Ups 2” this weekend, Adam Sandler enters rare territory: this is the first-ever sequel for quite possibly the most bankable comedic personality of his generation. Other actors would have found a way to continue the saga of “The Waterboy” or allowed a triumphant return for “Happy Gilmore,” but Sandler, until recently, has built his career on savvy choices and (debatably) original characters and stories.

Grown Ups 2
Spoiler alert: the very last joke of “Grown Ups 2” involves a character passing gas on Salma Hayek. This is Salma Hayek, one of the great actresses of international cinema, a global star in multiple languages, one of the most beautiful women in the world, and an Oscar nominee. This is Salma Hayek, who has served on the Cannes jury and has produced and starred in several boundary-crossing Spanish language films, where her consistency has become almost taken for granted. And here she is, in “Grown Ups 2,” where she exists in order to model low-cut trash fashion that spotlights her chest, and then eat a mouthful of flatulence as the final punchline to a vanity project by some of our most famous, laziest American comedians. This is the way our film culture ends: not with a whimper, but with a fart.

The Films Of Adam Sandler
Beloved on “Saturday Night Live” and loved a lot less since then, one need look no further than recent conversations about a box office weekend showdown (“Pacific Rim” vs. “Grown Ups 2”) to see just how far Adam Sandler's reputation has sunk with some audiences. Often perceived as a moronic blight on comedy and movies, this point is sometimes difficult to argue, especially in recent years as the quality of his comedies has become nearly negligible (though Armond White will fight you on that opinion to the death; that respected critic loves the man).

So, this summer marks a not so momentous occasion: "Grown Ups 2" is the first Adam Sandler sequel. And in making the followup to the smash hit "Grown Ups" -- a movie we still have a tough time believing anyone actually liked, even though lots of people went to see it for some reason -- Sandler rounded up some extra help to join his regular crew. And we never though we would type this but it's come to the point where Taylor Lautner is now funnier than Adam Sandler. Really.
