No Good Deed
“Critics don’t matter,” is often the refrain and the truth of the matter is they do and they don’t. Audiences use them selectively as guides. So when a critical consensus says Michael Bay’s latest “Transformers” isn’t worth seeing, well audiences tend to go regardless. But sharp drop off attendance suggests audiences knew they were right. And then there’s of course the times when critics tell you a movie is incredible, perhaps “Guardians Of The Galaxy,” “Boyhood” or “Dawn of The Planet Of The Apes” and audiences come out in droves. Perhaps audiences wanted to go regardless, but where it really matters is those films that audiences are feeling pretty unsure about already, read their favorite sites, see mixed reviews and then decide to stay home. This year’s poor box-office, the worst in a decade or more, is a testament to that. I digress.

Guardians Of The Galaxy
They say January is the dumping ground for movies, but they tend to forget that late August/early September is a pretty piss-poor time at the box-office as well. And so it should be no surprise then that this past weekend amounted to the slowest box-office of the entire year.

Guardians of the Galaxy
Labor Day weekend tends to be slow at the box office, and accordingly, no new film managed to break through to the top of the list of biggest earning films this weekend. Mostly everyone is doing something other than going to the movies, but those that did go to the theatre chose one of the biggest movies of the year.

The Winners & Losers Of The Summer Of 2014
With the Venice Film Festival kicking off today with the premiere of “Birdman," and this week’s releases being “The November Man” and “As Above, So Below,” it can only mean one thing: summer is over. Labor Day is almost upon us, days are getting shorter, and Oscar season is closing in, and as such, it seems like the perfect time to look back at the summer movie season.

Guardians Of The Galaxy
Well, this doesn’t happen with blockbusters. The movies usually act as firecrackers, shining bright in their opening weekends and then eventually diminishing, either rapidly or gradually depending on their hold. Marvel’s big 2014 “risk,” “Guardians Of The Galaxy” has such a hold. It’s been number two at the box-office for two weeks, having to suffer the mild ignominy of having to play second fiddle to the “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” reboot, but it appears that the kids have gotten their fill of Michael Bay’s company’s redo. Dropping only 30% from last weekend, “Guardians Of The Galaxy” is back at the #1 spot this weekend after it’s fourth weekend of release and it’s also becoming the highest grossing film of the summer. Yep, ‘Guardians’ has outgrossed both "Transformers: Age of Extinction" and "Maleficent" to attain the summer box office crown.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
Let’s recap since we didn’t really do a proper box-office report last weekend (aside from this brief report). Despite middling reviews, and tepid online buzz, Platinum Dunes’ “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” reboot surprised everyone with a $65 million debut weekend that took the #1 slot and prevented Marvel’s “Guardians Of The Galaxy” from claiming the top slot for two weeks in a row. Clearly some members of the population (maybe kids with less bias) were more than happy to 'shell' over their money for ‘TMNT.’ Marvel’s ‘Guardians’ wasn’t able to repeat at #1 like many expected, but it hasn't mattered much. The movie took only 15 days to hit the $200 million mark which is the fastest film to hit that milestone in 2014.

Guardians Of The Galaxy
At what point does Marvel's universe building go from being an integral part of a given film's storyline to a box they have check with each movie churned out by the studio? Some would argue it's reached that point already, and the following intel suggests Kevin Feige and co. are cramming characters into spaces they don't necessarily need to be in.

Guardians Of The Galaxy
Unless you’ve been locked in the Kyln, you probably noticed that “Guardians Of The Galaxy” opened this past weekend. Marvel’s latest extravaganza, a space adventure directed by Troma graduate James Gunn, was seen in advance of its release as the riskiest of the studio’s ten movies: based on a mostly comic known only to "Marvel Zombies"; unfamiliar characters; significantly different in setting and tone to megahit “The Avengers”; a cast comprised of untested B-listers as well as A-listers voicing an animated raccoon and a tree.

Guardians Of The Galaxy
So, where do we start? Marvel's "Guardians Of The Galaxy" came into the weekend with good tracking numbers, with many expecting it to come near or even modestly past the previous August weekend record holder, "The Bourne Ultimatum," which opened to $69.3 million in 2007. But no one expected this.

10 Films To See In August
So, another year, another month of August to end the summer movie season with a whimper, amirite? Perhaps, but we here at The Playlist took the tagline to “American Beauty,” way back in 1999, to heart… look closer. There’s still plenty of McMovies to clog your cinematic arteries, but sometimes, those blockbusters are tasty. And if you step outside of the multiplex, there are plenty more movies that give you a more healthy, balanced cinematic diet.
