Guardians Of The Galaxy
"Guardians Of The Galaxy" has the unique distinction of being both the biggest and weirdest movie to hit the multiplex in wide release this summer. It's a comic book movie in which the heroes include a tree and a talking raccoon. And yet, Disney and Marvel are the ones behind it, bringing this big, freaky, space adventure to screens everywhere. And today a further taste of what's coming has arrived.

Guardians Of The Galaxy
Aspects ratios are the new... black, we guess? Certainly, there's been more conversation lately about the framing of images in movies, from Wes Anderson's "The Grand Budapest Hotel" serving up three different formats, while Xavier Dolan's "Tom At The Farm" and the upcoming "Mommy," also play with the black bars. And so it was probably just a matter of time until a major studio blockbuster did the same.

Josh Brolin, Thanos In 'Guardians Of The Galaxy
Blah, blah, blah, blah "Ant-Man." While Marvel has yet to resolve that issue, they're hoping to refocus attention on their summer blockbuster "Guardians Of The Galaxy," and what better way to do that than to show off the much talked about villain Thanos?

Josh Brolin, Thanos In 'Guardians Of The Galaxy
While the "Ant-Man" saga has yet to be resolved, last week Marvel gave fans a bit of good news with the announcement of Josh Brolin nabbing the role of Thanos in "Guardians Of The Galaxy" and likely, down the line, "The Avengers 3." But does that mean that for now, Thanos is going to continue to be a bit player in the Marvel universe? New details have emerged providing a bit more detail, and if the headline wasn't obvious enough, there will be spoilers.

Josh Brolin, Thanos In 'Guardians Of The Galaxy
The crime thriller “Sicario” is sounding better and better every day. It’s already being directed by Denis Villeneuve, the filmmaker behind “Prisoners” and “Enemy,” and it stars Emily Blunt and Benicio Del Toro. If that's not enough, celebrated director of photography Roger Deakins, who shot “Prisoners” (so underrated), has confirmed he’ll be the DP on this picture as well.

Guardians, James Gunn, Ant-Man
So if you believed the morning rumors, which honestly smelled a little bit more like horseshit than usual, James Gunn, director of Marvel’s “The Guardians Of The Galaxy” was going to take over “Ant-Man” from the now departed Edgar Wright. Hey, Gunn was understanding of the problems between mom and dad, and hell, his Marvel movie was to 2014 what Wright’s “Ant-Man” was to 2015—a risk. Presumably Gunn’s done a great job of blending wacky comedy and “risk” along with the narrative foundations of what Marvel needs and expects for their tentpoles, so he’d make a good choice, right?

Guardians, James Gunn, Ant-Man
If the Edgar Wright and Marvel split over “Ant-Man” is actually less amicable than originally suggested, maybe it is more akin to a “divorce” as fans have been putting it? After all, Wright developed the project for Marvel for eight years only to walk away late last week allegedly after a script rewrite that Wright agreed to, but didn’t love.

Guardians Of The Galaxy
So far, the superheroes of 2014 have presented a mixed bag. We've had one pretty good movie ("Captain America: The Winter Soldier"), a pretty terrible one ("The Amazing Spider-Man 2") and one yet to be determined (this weekend's "X-Men: Days Of Future Past"). And there's still more to come. At the end of the summer, Marvel will unleash "Guardians Of The Galaxy," and a brand new trailer has arrived hoping to convince you to go into orbit ... or at least to your closest multiplex.

Guardians Of The Galaxy
“Life is giving us a chance.” Yep, it’s a bunch of criminals in outer space with a chance to do good and redeem themselves. It’s Marvel’s “The Guardians Of The Galaxy,” an untested, mostly unknown property that they’re trying to make into a new franchise. No one knows it? Marvel’s brand and their “if you build it properly” motto seems to be working for them.

Guardians Of The Galaxy
Yeah, we know. It seems a bit "duh, obviously" that a Marvel property is considered a viable vehicle for future films, but just wait a moment. You have to remember that aside from the comic faithful, Joe Average has no idea what the hell "Guardians Of The Galaxy" is besides what they see in the trailer. It's already an unlikely candidate for a movie, and so the idea of further films doesn't immediately seem like a no-brainer. That said, we've already heard rumblings that spinoff solo films might be in the works, and that the film is connected to "The Avengers 3." And Disney chief Bob Iger is thinking even bigger.
