We'd been a little worried that something was up with "Blood Ties." The promise of a team-up of Guillaume Canet and James Gray was terrific, especially on an epic crime 70s-set crime saga, and Canet had assembled a hugely impressive cast for his English-language debut, including Clive Owen, Marion Cotillard, Billy Crudup, Zoe Saldana, Matthias Schoenaerts, Mila Kunis, James Caan and Noah Emmerich. But despite Gray's status as a Cannes favorite, the film was being shown out of competition at the festival, and disappointingly, it seems that there was a reason for that; reaction to the film, including our own review, have been rather lukewarm.

If there is any movie this year at Cannes that is absolutely brimming with promise on paper, it's Guillaume Canet's "Blood Ties." With an extended cast featuring Clive Owen, Billy Crudup, Mila Kunis, Matthias Schoenaerts, Zoe Saldana, James Caan, Marion Cotillard, Noah Emmerich and Lili Taylor among others along with a script co-written by James Gray, one wonders how it could go wrong. And while "Blood Ties" isn't a disaster, it's certainly a mess, a sprawling crime saga that endeavours to evoke the great character-driven movies of the 1970s, but never quite lives up to its epic scope.

James Gray's 'Low Life' With Joaquin Phoenix, Jeremy Renner & Marion Cotillard Aims To Start Shooting In January 2012Given the Hollywood-friendly slickness of his directorial efforts to date, it was only a matter of time before French actor Guillaume Canet made a film in the U.S. The star of "The Beach" and "Love Me If You Dare," among many others, stepped behind the camera to much acclaim with 2002's Cesar-nominated "Mon Idole," the 2007 thriller "Tell No One" (which Ben Affleck is planning to remake), and followed it up with 2010's "Little White Lies," all of which showed an international sensibility.

"The Artist" actor Jean Dujardin is to director Michel Hazanavicius what Ryan Gosling is to Nicolas Winding Refn. With the former's silent movie sensation winning over audiences and poised to become a Best Picture nominee at the Oscars, it marks their third film together following the two very popular French-language spy spoof 'OSS 177' films, and what do you know, the pair have already collaborated on another project that is gearing up for release next spring in France.

The cinema world in France is fairly close knit and so it comes as a bit of a surprise that veteran Daniel Auteuil has never worked with Guillaume Canet, a vanguard of the new breed. But that situation has now been rectified as the duo are pairing up for an Olympic equestrian drama "Jappeloup" --- and no, you're reading that wrong.

While it boasts a strong, marquee-named cast and some decent performances, Keira Knightley, Sam Worthington, Eva Mendes and French actor/director Guillaume Canet ("Tell No One," Marion Cotillard's baby daddy) Iranian-American screenwriter Massy Tadjedin's directorial debut, "Last Night," is an unconvincing portrait of unhappiness and marital disenfranchisement. A largely hollow couples-in-crisis infidelity drama, the picture lacks any romantic or sexual electricity, and doesn't possess many glimmers of substantive sparks. Characters go through the motions, but rarely do they echo in any resonant manner. While "Last Night" attempts to document the collapse of a marriage during one evening and the occurrences and issues that lead up to such an unfortunate event, it simply leaves one yearning for much, much more.

After hitting the festival circuit last year and wowing audiences in its native France where it was one of the country's highest earning films last year, an English subtitled trailer for "Little White Lies" has finally arrived.
