Weekend Box Office: 'Gnomeo' Leapfrogs 'Hall Pass,' Audiences Not 'Angry' Enough To 'Drive'

Rats off to ya, “Gnomeo And Juliet.” After two weeks in release, the ‘toon has vaulted into first place, generating $14 million this weekend on its way to a 3D-boosted $100 million+ gross. The Disney Touchstone release, populated almost entirely by British actors, is something of a surprise hit, since it looked like a throwaway purchase along the lines of “Planet 51” or “Hoodwinked.” Consider this something of an anomaly: who knew animated lawn gnomes would generate such business?

Happy Oscar weekend! This Sunday brings the apex of Hollywood's season, rewarding those 2010 films we've been talking about for so long. Who will wear what? What upsets will we be rooting for? Will James Franco perform some kind of bizarre performance art stunt as part of his hosting duties (all signs point to YES). We will be live blogging the events of Sunday evening, so check back in for the rockin'est Oscar commentary your computer has seen. In the meantime, get your highbrow on and rent those remaining DVDs of the Oscar contenders you missed. If you've seen them all or just don't feel like sitting through ye olde Oscar bait, some delightfully lowbrow releases await you at the theater. 2011 Cage's Festival of Wigs continues with the awesomely awesome looking "Drive Angry 3D," and "Hall Pass" brings us our weekly dose of gross sex humor! Down the hatch! There are also a few small arthouse releases, such as the latest from 22-year-old (!!!!!!!) filmmaker Xavier Dolan.

Review: 'Hall Pass' A Raunchy Sex Comedy That's Afraid Of Sex

It might seem like a distant memory, but at one time the Farrelly Brothers were the leading the pack -- and were possibly the only players of note -- in the arena of progressive, raunchy comedies. The trifecta of "Dumb & Dumber," "There's Something About Mary" and "Kingpin" put the sibling duo on the map but ever since, they've been chasing past glory to lesser and lesser effect which now brings us to "Hall Pass." Coming barely a month after "No Strings Attached," the Farrellys' film may be all dressed up in the trappings of a taboo breaking comedy but by comparison, it makes the Natalie Portman/Ashton Kutcher vehicle look positively avant garde. And worse, this might be the only R-rated sex comedy to get a thumbs up from the conservative right.

Why Armie Hammer Was Cut From The Film And Other Revelations From The Filmmakers, Owen Wilson & Jason Sudeikis "Hall Pass," the upcoming comedy from Peter and Bobby Farrelly ("There's Something About Mary," "Kingpin," "Dumb And Dumber"), sees Owen Wilson and Jason Sudeikis as two friends given a week-long hall pass from their wives (played by Jenna Fischer and Christina Applegate). They have one week off from marriage and thus the freedom to chase the girls they constantly ogle and lust after. If anything, this is a movie for those that have, in a way, been growing up with the Farrellys: with a mix of the outrageous humor they're known for, but a grasp for some more heartfelt moments as well. Sudeikis, in particular, makes a mark as the off-the-wall best buddy.

Watch: Red Band Trailer For 'Hall Pass' Slightly Better, Proves Richard Jenkins Is Amazing

We've always got a lot of hope for the Farrelly Brothers but we're unsure why. The duo haven't made a decent comedy in over a decade, and their recent output has paled greatly to the new school raunch comedy directors led by Judd Apatow and his merry band of filthy mouthed thesps. So here we have "Hall Pass," a film that has a good concept, but that failed to impress us with its first trailer. However, a new red band trailer for the film has arrived courtesy of Digital Spy and it's a slight improvement, with a couple of well-earned big laughs and Richard Jenkins showing up and pretty much stealing the whole thing.

It's almost December, which means that 2010 is already starting to sneak out from under the covers, before putting its clothes on and disappearing forever. That in turn means that the studios are starting to send out their promotional materials for their 2011 slates. Between these and the 2011 previews from the likes of Empire and EW, we're going to get a lot of first looks at pictures in the next few weeks, so fans of film stills, synopses, or movie blogs desperately trying to pad out otherwise thin posts should keep their eyes peeled in the run up to Christmas.

We have to admit, we did have some hopes for this one. Directed by the Farrelly Brothers, who are still chasing the early trifecta of funny "Dumb & Dumber," "Kingpin" and "There's Something About Mary," we kept our optimism slightly raised with the likes of Owen Wilson, Jason Sudeikis, Jenna Fischer, Christina Applegate, J.B. Smoove and Stephen Merchant among the cast.
