Steven Spielberg To Executive Produce 'Halo' TV Series For Xbox Live

Given that there's original content on streaming services Amazon Prime, Hulu and Netflix, it was only a matter of time before the game consoles got in on the action. Today during an overlong and somewhat confusing press conference for the new Xbox system (unimaginatively dubbed Xbox One,) it was announced that Steven Spielberg would be exec-producing an original television series for Xbox's Xbox Live streaming service based on the phenomenally popular series of "Halo" videogames. The series will be produced in conjunction with game studio 343 Studios.

Sony Pictures are finally on the promotional path for "Elysium," the Matt Damon-starring sci-fi film, written and directed by Neill Blomkamp, the filmmaker behind "District 9." Like his Peter Jackson-produced debut, which was set in a post-apocalyptic future in Johannesburg, dealing with issues like apartheid, xenophobia, poverty and slums, "Elysium" also blends mind-blowing action and effects with social concerns and textures this time featuring a 1% elite upper crust on a space station, and the 99% social class on a overpopulated and over polluted planet Earth below.

Yesterday, Neill Blomkamp hit Hall H at Comic-Con with seven minutes of footage from his sophomore feature film effort, "Elysium." The "District 9" director was returning to San Diego as a bit of a hero, having unveiled his first feature at the convention to a rapturous reception and subsequent critical and box office success. But as fans know, Blomkamp nearly made his debut with the Peter Jackson-produced "Halo," an experience he has not minced words about, describing it earlier this year as "a clusterfuck from day one." But, sitting down to chat with our own Jeff Otto, he reveals: "I think 'Halo' was a complete blessing in disguise. I have no idea what would've happened to my career if I had done that."

There are few franchises in recent memory that were announced with as much excitement only to collapse as spectacularly as the proposed video game movie "Halo." Trumpeted with great fanfare in 2005, the expensive project was seen as the next big blockbuster, with the promise of a built-in, worldwide fanbase, and despite the cost, two major studios teamed up to make it happen. But as these things go, the ink was barely dry on the deal before things went south, development stalled, contracts tried to be renegotiated and eventually, the whole thing sputtered out in a rather ugly mess.
