If the performance this summer of "Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter" was anything to go by, the future of the "[Insert Name Of Historical Or Literary Figure]: [Insert Name Of Supernatural Creature] Hunter" sub-genre isn't looking too great; even on a relatively modest budget, Timur Bekmambetov's horror-actioner failed to make much of a box office impact, only just scraping its way to $100 million worldwide. But if Paramount had any second thoughts about their own "Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters," it was too late; the film had long since wrapped (indeed, it was set to come out first, until it was delayed nearly a full year by the studio), and was already on the release schedule.

We have to admit, we were beginning to wonder what was going on with Neill Blomkamp's expensive, mysterious "Elysium." With a release dating looming about five months from now and no posters, teaser trailers, stills or any other kind of marketing, we figured either that a) Sony was going to start a blitzkrieg campaign once they were done with "Skyfall" or b) it was getting pushed back. Now we have our answer.

Sorry, but every time we hear "Hansel" all we can think of is Will Ferrell following it up with "So hot right now." But whether or not the delayed "Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters" is "hot" remains to be seen, but judging from this first trailer we're thinking....not.

With a release date for "Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters" pushed from this past spring to next January, and then rumors that Paramount was trying to figure out whether to release the film in a PG-13 incarnation or R-rated, it seemed like the movie was facing some trouble. Fear not: those who like their entertainment to be the kind that forces those under 17 to be accompanied by a parent or guardian are in luck.

Let's face it, films aren't moved from a prime spring date to the bowels of January because they are awesome. And thus when Paramount yanked "Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters" from its March 2nd date and dropped in the wasteland of January 11, 2013, a distinct odour of fromage began emanating from the movie (if it wasn't there already). And when it was further kept from eyes at Comic-Con, which would seem the next logical step to at least start generating some buzz around a movie that thus far, only has a single still image as promotional material, again, not a good sign. And now comes word that only five months from release, the studio has no idea how to release the movie.

You could have called this one months ago. Paramount's "Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters" was supposed to be due in theaters on March 2nd, less than two months from now and we'd barely seen a peep from the film, not a trailer, a poster or anything other than this first-look photo that was revealed just a month ago. Never a good sign. In fact, that close to release and nothing substantial seen and you can almost guarantee a release date bump is on the way.
