While Steven Soderbergh still managed to assemble a great cast for his upcoming "Haywire," word around the campfire is that some actors actually turned down the film, not exactly cool with the idea of letting a woman beat them up on screen. Their loss. Turning MMA star Gina Carano into an action heroine, "Haywire" is a brisk thriller that lets you feel and see every brutal punch and kick.

Steven Soderbergh generally keeps a pretty regular crew of behind-the-scenes folks and on-camera stars from film to film. Sure, he may switch things up from time to time, but familiar faces are never too far away from whatever project he's currently working on. Thus, with his upcoming "Haywire," while it mostly features a number of folks working with him for the first time – Gina Carano, Ewan McGregor, Antonio Banderas, Michael Fassbender, Bill Paxton – it's based on a script from Lem Dobbs ("Kafka," "The Limey") and powering the whole thing along is a score by David Holmes.

For a guy who is set to retire/take a hiatus from filmmaking, Steven Soderbergh couldn't be more busy. "Contagion" just hit theaters last fall, the stripper pic "Magic Mike" is wrapped and headed to theaters this summer, and oh yeah, he's got another movie, finished for a while now, hitting the multiplex in just a couple of weeks. It's called "Haywire" and it will kick your ass.

Traditionally, January is something of a wasteland for the movies; as the last of the awards season pictures roll out, studios tend to use it to dump product that they know won't set the world alight critically or commercially. This year is, for the most part, no exception: dicey prospects like found footage horror "The Devil Inside," long-delayed Katherine Heigl vehicle "One For The Money," unnecessary vampire fourquel "Underworld: Awakening" and a film starring Dolly Parton are among what January has to offer. But there's at least one release coming in the first month of the year that promises something far more potent; "Haywire."

With Steven Soderbergh's next next next film being announced earlier in the week as psychological thriller "The Bitter Pill" his next, "Haywire" (shot before "Contagion," but released after, although still ahead of the just-wrapped "Magic Mike") is getting closer and closer, and the film screened in New York last night to a delighted audience, many of whom were MMA fans.

At film festivals, it’s hardly uncommon for a Q&A to get hijacked when an overzealous audience member decides to compliment the filmmakers and then ask an eight-minute question that almost always boils down to “how did you do _____?” But on Sunday night at AFI Fest, none other than the moderator spoiled a post-screening question and answer session, when “The Informant” actor Joel McHale stumbled through a spectacularly awkward and nonsensical conversation with the cast and crew of “Haywire” after Relativity offered the film for a secret screening (read our review here).
