AFI Fest kicks off today with Clint Eastwood's "J. Edgar" getting its world premiere, and the lineup for the next week includes an array of awards season heavy hitters including "The Artist," "Carnage," "Shame," "Rampart" and more. However, just like last year, they've got one film yet to be announced. Festival-goers in 2010 were pleasantly surprised with a secret screening of David O. Russell's "The Fighter," and on Sunday night another mystery movie will be unveiled, one that should definitely get the adrenaline pumping of everyone in the room.

With the theatrical window of "Contagion" still wrapping up as we speak, we can now start to turn our attention to the next directorial effort of Steven Soderbergh; the prolific helmer's female-driven actioner "Haywire" starring former MMA-star Gina Carano is already in the can (and, having shot before "Contagion," has been for a while) and awaiting its January unveiling.

Director Talks Action Geography, Playing With Narrative & How The Spy-Thriller Has Tested Well With Female AudiencesAside from films lead by Angelina Jolie, action pictures starring women are increasingly rare. What's also few and far between is male stars, known for their action lead roles, who are willing to have their asses handed to them on screen by a member of the opposite sex. When Steven Soderbergh started casting up his latest, the spy action thriller, "Haywire," these are part of the problems he encountered. Well known action stars -- we won't name names -- who didn't want their asses kicked by a woman shied away from the project.

With only five films left to go before self-imposed retirement, each of Steven Soderbergh's remaining projects promises to bring at the very least, a super interesting twist on several genres the director has yet to fully tackle ("Liberace" likely being part musical, etc.).

It's been a bit of long and bumpy ride for Steven Soderbergh's lean, mean action pic "Haywire." First the movie went from Lionsgate to Relativity, and it was set up with an April 22nd release date. As the snow started melting, the movie was moved to late summer as fine tuning continued on the picture but then it was moved once more -- and finally -- to January 20, 2012. That might seem odd, but you have remember that "Contagion" just moved up a full month to a September 9th release and we'd wager that Soderbergh -- as well as Warner Bros. and Relativity -- wanted to make sure that there was breathing room between both pics (and the ever busy Soderbergh is also shooting another new movie this fall, "Magic Mike" to complicate things further).

Relativity Media Will Distribute in U.S.Well, that's one film we can take out of awards contention for 2011. One of Steven Soderbergh's upcoming films "Haywire" won't be released till January 20, 2012. As we've been saying all along, Relativity Media has retained the domestic rights, with Lionsgate holding on to the foreign rights. Lionsgate was all set to release in the U.S. as well, until restructuring gave partner Relativity its own domestic arm for distribution. The initial date was April, 2011, which Soderbergh confirmed himself, but it was never officially announced; the restructuring deal points took much longer than anyone expected. Then August, 2011 became the next date everyone was zeroing on, but they too lost that window of opportunity when the deal pushed back the chance to release trailers and posters.
