Spike Jonze, Her, Joaquin Phoenix
An Oscar nominee in five categories, perhaps the most pleasantly surprising nod Spike Jonze's "Her" received was for Best Original Score, credited to Win Butler and Owen Pallett, but performed by Arcade Fire. And yet, even with the critical acclaim for the movie, and the biggest-band-on-the-planet status for the group, the film is still without an official soundtrack or even a release date. It's still not clear when or how we'll be able to own Arcade Fire's score (which sits alongside some other choice songs in the movie), so this will have to appease for you now (until it's probably eventually yanked).

Her, Joaquin Phoenix
In case you're just waking up or haven't talked to anyone today, we'll gently remind you that this morning the Oscar nominations were unveiled, and were pleased to see Spike Jonze's "Her" capture four nominations including Best Picture, Best Song, Best Screenplay and Best Score (the latter was a pleasant surprise). And now it looks like we'll have even more reason to celebrate Jonze's wonderfully melancholy look at love, technology and relationships.

Oscar Snubs, Surprises: 2014
Well, the Oscar nominations are in and Twitter has exploded with the usual flurry of WTF?s, OMG!s and TOLDJA!s (perhaps we follow the wrong people). And while in general it seems like a lot of the last-minute trend predictions went in the right direction (Redford went very cool for “All is Lost,” “Inside Llewyn Davis” too, though perhaps not quite icy enough to predict a near-total shut-out), in amongst the various entirely expected nominations, there were a fair number of films and performances we didn’t expect to see, and a few we had to double check we didn’t (you can read our full predictions here to see how right and wrong we were).

Her, Joaquin Phoenix
A number of enviable technological advances—at least on the surface—exist in Spike Jonze’s “Her," but for those who’ve seen the film they’d likely be traded for a standalone release of Arcade Fire’s wonderful score. Also featuring contributions from Owen Pallett and Karen O, the soundtrack has yet to be given a concrete release date, however until one emerges we’ve got a new trailer showcasing Arcade Fire’s stunning work, a fun easter egg from Jonze’s film for LA residents, and much more.

American Hustle
Well, that's a wrap. "12 Years a Slave" won Best Drama, but "American Hustle" took three of the top prizes including Best Comedy/Musical, Best Actress Comedy/Musical and Best Supporting Actress. Probably the biggest surprise of the night, though not a shock if you've been reading the tea leaves of late, Matthew McConaughey scoring the Best Actor (Drama) prize for "Dallas Buyers Club" over Robert Redford, Chiwetel Ejiofor and that crowded field. More analysis tomorrow and in the meantime, check out to see how we did with our Globes predictions.

We're now only ten days from the announcement of the Oscar nominations, with one of the busiest weeks of the season before that (DGA and BAFTA nominations are still to come this week, along with the Golden Globe Awards on Sunday).
