THR Actress Roundtable
Well, it’s getting near that time for the Emmys, arguably the Oscars of TV, and as TV keeps gaining ground on movies—see movie star Tom Hardy’s recent comments on the medium—the Emmys are becoming more and more legitimate (well, except when it comes to the nominees and winners, but still...). And in fact, whether you disagree on the quality of smart TV over modern cinema, it’s becoming increasingly difficult to argue that the acting quality is any lesser.

Does piracy help or hurt the industry? Heading into 2014, that's the riddle that still has a variety of answers depending on who you ask. There are some who say that that being able to "sample" music (or movies or films) first leads to folks buying concert tickets, DVDs or merchandise, thus still providing a revenue stream to the creative people and content creators behind those efforts. Others say that theft is theft, and that an album or movie downloaded is still a lost album or ticket sale. And even at HBO, opinion is divided, as their most popular show is also their most illegally downloaded.

Last night TV's finest -- which these days tends to include some of movie's finest too -- gathered for the Emmy Awards, while the the rest of us stayed glued to "Breaking Bad" and to some extent, the series finale of "Dexter." Either way, both options were better than that dubstep dance routine to "Breaking Bad" on the awards show. And once the jokes were over, and tributes were finished, some statues were handed out honoring some fine folks.

After a particularly strong first season, "Homeland" took a little bit of a downswing in its second. The first few episodes were cracking, but they were so daring in the amount of plot it tore through that it didn't leave much for the back half of the season, which disconnected increasingly with reality.

It might seem like "Breaking Bad" is only thing coming up on TV worth caring about but for many the return of "Homeland" for its third season is yet another good reason to stay in this fall. The acclaimed show is riding high at the moment, with 8 Emmy nominations for its second season, following four wins for its first season including Best Drama, Best Actress, Best Actor and Best Writing. Not too shabby, but can they keep it up?

More rankings! As Oscar prognosticators puzzle, fret and worry over each top ten list that drops, a few patterns are becoming clear -- firstly, everyone loves "Zero Dark Thirty." And secondly, it looks like outside of a couple of categories, Paul Thomas Anderson's "The Master" won't be making much of a mark on the Oscar race. And indeed, the AFI shut it out entirely.

It’s one of the President of the United States’ favorite shows, it just swept the Primetime Emmys (the coveted Best Drama Award, plus Best Actor and Best Actress) and the second-season premiere boasted its highest ratings to date until last night's episode broke them (1.75 million). So yes, it’s safe to say Showtime’s “Homeland” is very much the darling of the cable network who has, in the eyes of some, struggled to compete with HBO at least in terms of similar acclaim, awards and must-watch shows.

Television's most meta night -- where TV stars gather on TV to give each other TV awards -- went down on Sunday evening, and the biggest story of the Emmys wasn't who won, but who didn't win. AMC's "Mad Men," which went into the show with 17 nominations -- the most of any show -- walked away with nothing, while a familiar awards powerhouse and a newcomer dominated the prizes.

For many viewers out there in TV land, “Homeland” is the series they often refer to as the quintessential example of how television is currently offering a more nuanced, mature, and satisfying entertainment diversion than what’s being shown at your local multiplex this weekend. The Claire Daines and Damian Lewis-starring series recently had its sweep of Awards season, picking up nods and wins at everything from the Golden Globes to Writers Guild of America statues, and now season 2 is looking ready to bring all that drama and suspense back to your television sets.
