'The Dark Knight Rises' Makes AFI's Top 10 Of The Year, But No Sign Of 'The Master'

More rankings! As Oscar prognosticators puzzle, fret and worry over each top ten list that drops, a few patterns are becoming clear -- firstly, everyone loves "Zero Dark Thirty." And secondly, it looks like outside of a couple of categories, Paul Thomas Anderson's "The Master" won't be making much of a mark on the Oscar race. And indeed, the AFI shut it out entirely.

It’s one of the President of the United States’ favorite shows, it just swept the Primetime Emmys (the coveted Best Drama Award, plus Best Actor and Best Actress) and the second-season premiere boasted its highest ratings to date until last night's episode broke them (1.75 million). So yes, it’s safe to say Showtime’s “Homeland” is very much the darling of the cable network who has, in the eyes of some, struggled to compete with HBO at least in terms of similar acclaim, awards and must-watch shows.

Television's most meta night -- where TV stars gather on TV to give each other TV awards -- went down on Sunday evening, and the biggest story of the Emmys wasn't who won, but who didn't win. AMC's "Mad Men," which went into the show with 17 nominations -- the most of any show -- walked away with nothing, while a familiar awards powerhouse and a newcomer dominated the prizes.

For many viewers out there in TV land, “Homeland” is the series they often refer to as the quintessential example of how television is currently offering a more nuanced, mature, and satisfying entertainment diversion than what’s being shown at your local multiplex this weekend. The Claire Daines and Damian Lewis-starring series recently had its sweep of Awards season, picking up nods and wins at everything from the Golden Globes to Writers Guild of America statues, and now season 2 is looking ready to bring all that drama and suspense back to your television sets.
