Houdini
He was a man who could do the impossible. He thrilled the entire world as one of the greatest magicians and illusionists of all time. And no, we're not talking about Criss Angel. Harry Houdini continues to fascinate decades after his mysterious death, commonly thought to be caused by appendicitis, though rumors of foul play persist to this day. And none other than Adrien Brody will bring this signature turn of the century saga to life.

Call it the influence of Terrence Malick or just pure performance, but take any recent film dabbling in the natural world from a young boy's perspective and you can bet actor Tye Sheridan's name was hovering around the cast list. Since “The Tree of Life,” the 16-year-old has landed lead roles in “Mud,” opposite Matthew McConaughey, and David Gordon Green's upcoming “Joe” with Nicolas Cage. His next project finds him facing another major name, but thankfully with a different genre slant.

The news of Aaron Sorkin’s disappearance from the writing credits of a production about the art of escapology reads like a shrewd meta-marketing strategy. Reported on Deadline yesterday, it is in fact a rather feeble casualty of circumstances, with Sorkin jumping ship from Broadway’s upcoming "Houdini" musical to concentrate on the currently shooting second season of his "The West Wing"-esque walk-and-talk drama, "The Newsroom."

Even with a sixth reprise (if you count a brief cameo in "X-Men: First Class") of his best-known role in "The Wolverine" tentatively aiming for a start later in the year, the future seems to feature less ass-kicking and more jazz hands for Australian star Hugh Jackman. The actor got his start in musical theater, and was spotted by Bryan Singer on stage in "Oklahoma!" when Dougray Scott had to drop out of the original "X-Men," and while he's best known for his action-adventure roles, he's kept his oar in the world of singing and dancing, with a 2003 run in Broadway show "The Boy From Oz."

Considering that, in real life, the profession seems to fall somewhere between "repellent" and "unbelievably douchey" (see: David Blaine, Criss Angel), it's somewhat surprising how many magic-based movies we have going around these days. The 2006 double bill of "The Prestige" and "The Illusionist" was the peak of the genre, but recent years have also brought the animated "Illusionist," Guy Pearce in the little-seen "Death Defying Acts" and, later in the summer, David Tennant as a vampire-fighting trickster in "Fright Night," while an adaptation of the seminal novel "Carter Beats The Devil" recently got a new lease on life. Even Pixar got in on the act, with the short "Presto."
