If you bet any money on this weekend’s box office, you'll have to wait on Monday’s actuals, because this is a tight race between three new releases jockeying for the top spot with lukewarm grosses. Also, maybe see someone for your gambling problem.

For those of you keeping track, it’s Back-to-School Night, Part Deux at the cinemas this weekend. First stop, Sociology, where you’ll note the detailed study on how high school experiences impact the rest of one’s life. Biology is next, and a presentation on teen pregnancy. Then you’ll proceed to baseball in Gym, advanced studies in mise en place in Home Ec, and creating a video game OR filming a porno in Technology. In an unrelated note, there are also lots of cops on screen.

Review: 'House At The End Of The Street' Is Like 'Twilight' Meets 'The Devil's Rejects' (And Totally Awful)

All of the promotional materials for the woeful new horror film "House at the End of the Street" promote it as your standard cheap-o chiller – a plucky blonde with a fondness for clingy cotton T-shirts, Jennifer Lawrence is doggedly menaced by backwoods psychos after leaving her urban upbringing for a life of rural serenity. Except that's not what it is. No. It's far, far worse. Instead, "House at the End of the Street" is like one of the "Twilight" films mixed with "The Devil's Rejects," full of half-baked psychology, borderline inept filmmaking, and an undercurrent of deeply ugly misogyny that is scary, but not in the way the creative team intended. Forget about what happens in the movie, the mere act of watching "House at the End of the Street" is an act of torture.

If there is one thing this spring's "Silent House" with Elizabeth Olsen, this Friday's "The House At The End Of The Street" with Jennifer Lawrence, and next year's "Mama" with Jessica Chastain proves, it's that Hollywood loves getting their young female talent in tank tops/low cut shirts and then having them run around screaming. And "The Hunger Games" star will do just that this weekend.

"Why do you still live in the house your parents got killed in?" Jennifer Lawrence asks actor Max Thieriot in this music video clip from "House At The End Of The Street." Oh you, know, it's just your average sweet acoustic ballad/love song from a horror film where everyone gets murdered real good.

Before Jennifer Lawrence can begin the Oscar campaign for her excellent performance in David O. Russell's crowd-pleasing and hilarious "The Silver Linings Playbook" (read our review here), she'll have one hurdle to deftly navigate around -- the low-budget horror flick "The House At The End Of The Street." And with the movie dropping next weekend, more images have hit.

One of the stranger movie tie-in promotional items that, for some reason, continues to this day, is the novelization of the movie. Granted, when we were kids, movie obsession led us to read the book version of a film at one time or another, but do enough people care these days to make the investment in writing and publishing these efforts worth it? They must be, because the upcoming Jennifer Lawrence low-budget thriller "House at the End of the Street" is getting literary.
