The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug
Bloated, filling and it doesn't always leave you feeling good after... Nope, we're not talking about Thanksgiving dinner but rather, Peter Jackson's journeys into Middle Earth. While "The Lords Of The Rings" trilogy are some truly epic, involving blockbusters on a massive scale, they are not without their issues, which are usually exacerbated by the Extended Edition versions of the films. But it's nothing compared, at least thus far, to 'The Hobbit' trio of movies, with the first chapter dull and meandering, at least for the first half, before things pick up once the hobbits get moving. Why J.R.R. Tolkien's slim volume needs three movies we'll leave it to Peter Jackson to explain, but we will say this: at least 'The Desolation Of Smaug' has a dragon.

We haven't paid attention to the Grammys in years, mostly because it's irrelevant, these days we're barely familiar with half the nominees, and the show is usually pure tedium. (Don't even get us started on that Beach Boys tribute thing last year.) But for movie buffs looking to maintain their awards season high, yesterday's announcement of Grammy nominees did bring with it some films that are looking to collect gold from their pals in the music biz.

Making "The Hobbit" movies is expensive stuff (estimates put each installment between $200-300 million...damn...), which means the marketing and sales opportunities for this are going to be "interesting." Hell, we've already seen Air New Zealand and Denny's doing their best to pimp the brand. And when it comes to getting money out of the superfans, Peter Jackson and co. are finding ways to make completists buy stuff twice over.

Many fans of David Cronenberg have begun to miss the director's freakier films of the past, with the helmer taking on more sober fare in recent years including "A History Of Violence," "Eastern Promises" and "A Dangerous Method." To be certain, none of those efforts were what you would call mainstream, but they lacked the oddball flavor Cronenberg made his name with. Well, "Cosmopolis" should find the Canadian filmmaker returning to those more surreal efforts of the past, and, naturally, he still has few curveballs to deliver.

With top composers like Danny Elfman, Clint Mansell and Cliff Martinez all having graduated from the rock'n'roll world (Oingo Boingo, Pop Will Eat Itself and Red Hot Chili Peppers respectively), the idea of having bands tuning up a movie is becoming more and more and common these days, with Yo La Tengo, Mogwai, Daft Punk, The Chemical Brothers and Basement Jaxx among the many acts who've written film scores in recent years. The latest to join them; Canadian indie rock band Metric.

While the faces will be different in Peter Jackson's forthcoming two-parter "The Hobbit," the behind scenes talent will largely remain the same. With the project now gearing up to shoot in the longtime home of Middle Earth New Zealand, and with Jackson set to work with the same crews he utilized on those films, it's no surprise that a familiar name is returning to score the film and help replicate the magic of "The Lord Of The Rings" trilogy.
