At 61 years of age, the presumably hard-living Bill Murray conservatively only has two more decades of work left in him. So perhaps we all want him to really dazzle us with some meaty roles and not waste his time with middling fluff like Roger Michell's "Hyde Park on Hudson," a moderately pleasant but depthless picture that makes "The King's Speech" look like "A Clockwork Orange." OK, that's a purposeful exaggeration, but "Hyde Park on Hudson" is unremarkable; the type of would-be Oscar frivolity that makes sure it goes down the award season check list for every gentle and inoffensive cinematic element it can find.

Well, you can't have the best of the year without the worst, and while Cahiers Du Cinema got the ball rolling on the top films of the year, Time Magazine has dropped their rundown of the worst. And topping it all? The Wachowskis and Tom Tykwer's "Cloud Atlas."

This week sees the release of "Hyde Park On Hudson," the biopic of FDR that, despite a prestige-heavy cast and seemingly nakedly chasing the success of "The King's Speech," isn't riding as big a wave as we might've expected after premireing on the fall festival circuit in September. It may yet become a popular hit, but it looks unlikely to fulfill the purpose it was seemingly created for -- to finally win Bill Murray, one of our most beloved actors, an Oscar.

Once upon a time, we were excited about every Tim Burton picture that came along, but that's been steadily chipped away over the last decade or so. "Big Fish" and "Sweeney Todd" have their moments, but from "Planet of the Apes" to this year's "Dark Shadows," we feel more and more dread about each coming Burton production, dread that's normally justified when we see the finished product.

As we write this, we're somewhere over the Alps, flying back to London after an exhausting, rewarding week at the Venice Film Festival. Meanwhile, our editor-in-chief just returned from the mountains after an equally busy weekend at the Telluride Film Festival. Festival season is only just getting underway, with TIFF kicking off as we speak, and Venice doesn't wrap up til Saturday. But even so, it's true that the first salvo of the awards race have been fired in both Italy and Colorado, so it seems like a good time to run down which films have found themselves in a promising position after the last ten days or so, and which fizzled as soon as they arrived.

Looks like we were a dismal 1 for 5 on our Telluride wishlist/prediction piece, but no matter as there is still a lot to get excited about. The folks out in Colorado have unveiled their slate with the festival kicking off tomorrow, and it's a great mix of premieres and gems from Venice and Cannes.

It was a long, eventful road that John Hillcoat's adaptation of Matt Bondurant's "The Wettest County In The World" took into production, but the Nick Cave-scripted, Prohibition-era drama -- now titled "Lawless" -- will finally hit theaters on August 31st with a star-studded cast in tow. At the heart of all the action and drama is the youngest of the three Bondurant brothers, played by Shia LaBeouf, who finds himself front and center for the film's latest poster.
