BAMcinemaFEST 2013 Lineup Includes 'Ain’t Them Bodies Saints,' 'Short Term 12,' 'The Spectacular Now' & Much More

The BAMcinemaFEST film festival, run by BAMcinématek out of the Brooklyn Academy of Music, and now in its fifth year, has announced the complete lineup for 2013. Previous years included films from the likes of Lena Dunham, Nicolas Winding Refn and Lynn Shelton, and this year brings a fittingly eclectic collection of narrative and documentary movies as well, with 22 New York premieres and one world premiere in a schedule packed with upcoming indie talent and a few better-known faces.

In between the big events that mark our lives -- the births, the deaths, the falling-in-loves, the breaking-ups, the runnings-away, the reconciliations -- there often exists a kind of pause moment. And it’s one such moment that Matt Porterfield’s Sundance-approved third feature, “I Used to be Darker,” which plays at the Berlin Film Festival today, deals with; a caesura that punctuates the Big Life Business that is going on in the disparate lives of one fragmented family.

Here's the thing about film festival season. While it brings with it numerous high-profile titles that bloggers and movie fans have been following since day one, there is also a handful of strong movies we simply forgot about. Case in point: "A Single Shot." The long-developing picture firmed up its cast last spring, and went in front of cameras, and it promptly faded to the back of our minds. But today it was announced by the Berlin International Flim Festival as part of their Forum section, where it will be making its World Premiere. And a whole host of images for the movie have cropped up to give us a first peek.

Sprung from a five-page treatment and fashioned into a striking blend of drama and documentary, writer/director Matt Porterfield's “Putty Hill” took a community's reaction to a young death and explored it from a number of different angles. Now, with that film leading into a successful Kickstarter campaign for his third feature, “I Used to Be Darker,” a trailer for the Sundance-bound result has finally hit the web.
