When we last spoke to Nicolas Winding Refn last year at Cannes, following the premiere of his divisive "Only God Forgives," trying to get any information out of him about his brewing horror film "I Walk With The Dead" was a challenge. And when it was reported last fall that the project was bringing on a screenwriter, we figured it was probably a bit of a way off. But now over seven months later, Refn has announced the picture will be his next, and we couldn't be more excited.

Inside Llewyn Davis
Once the quietly bold, somewhat naïve teenage characters of “An Education” and “Never Let Me Go,” actress Carey Mulligan has swiftly altered course in the past few years and tapped into an inner rage—first as Michael Fassbender’s unsettled sister in Steve McQueen’s “Shame,” and now as the perpetually furious folk singer Jean in the Coen Brothers’ newest film, “Inside Llewyn Davis” (our review here). Her character has good reason (mild spoilers): facing the struggles of starting a music career in 1960s New York alongside a volatile affair with Llewyn (played by Oscar Isaac), Mulligan’s character is a cathartic, energetic flood of anger over Llewyn’s aimless nature, and a unique touch to the brilliant film that falls in line among the directors’ best.

Having learned that anything he says could potentially be a headline, Nicolas Winding Refn has become cagier about whatever prospective project he has brewing. And thus, it's no surprise then that, badass title aside, details on "I Walk With The Dead" have been fairly scarce. At one point, it was described as a movie with "lots of sex" and with Carey Mulligan attached, and Miami as the setting for the movie. Earlier this year, he confirmed with us that Mulligan was still attached, but that he was still working on the script. And now, it turns out he's brought in someone to help him out.

There was undoubtedly no film that caused quite the same disproportionate signal-to-noise ratio last week as “Only God Forgives,” Nicolas Winding Refn’s return to Cannes after winning Best Director in 2011 for “Drive.” While to us the extremely polarized reaction felt more to do with the perils of unrealistic expectations (“Drive” was a left-field surprise to many in a way that “Only God Forgives” could simply never have been, given Refn’s different profile this time out), there was a difference of opinion among attending Playlisters about the film, though not one separated by such a wide gulf as elsewhere.

There are a lot of things we want to know about Nicolas Winding Refn's "Only God Forgives," and we'll get to that movie in a moment, but first we need to address the image above. The picture has been one that has captivated and amused the Playlist staff if only because we have no idea what on Earth Refn is wearing around his waist or why. Well, mystery solved. "I like to wear that thing on set. It is as if it helps keep my energy," he recently told Liberation. In fact, it's a look he wears everyday to the set, and his wife reveals that the crew on her husband's last movie paid their respects to the director saying, "On Halloween, on the set of 'Drive,' the 75 people on the team all wore white shirts, glasses and a blanket around their waist. It was hilarious."
