22 Jump Street
Ordinarily, we're wary of sequels especially for comedies (we love you Will Ferrell, but "Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues" has a huge bar to hit), but we'll say this: the first red band trailer for "22 Jump Street" made us laugh. A lot.

While we might come off as Snooty McHighFaultinPants from time-to-time, the truth is we here at The Playlist love (well done) dumb fun as much as the next person. And it's safe to say, we're totally going to watch the shit out of "Ride Along."

With "The Heat" proving this past weekend that a fresh spin on an old formula can bring out audiences in droves, Universal will be hoping they can work the same magic next year with "Ride Along." Yes, it's another buddy cop movie that once again finds an interesting tweak to give everyone involved a new entry into the genre.

Since starting his studio career off strong with the solid hit “Barbershop,” director Tim Story then slowly turned in a string of mediocre releases (“Taxi,” “Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer”) that finally had folks questioning how he made off so well the first time. However, things changed crucially at the start of 2012, as his adaptation of Steve Harvey's book, “Think Like a Man,” garnered both critical and box office acclaim (clocking in at $91 million domestic), as well as a brewing sequel. And now Story has taken his newfound clout to a promising comedy project alongside a former collaborator who was there from the beginning.

Review: '21 Jump Street' Is A Hilarious, Heartfelt Action-Comedy That Just Might Be An Instant Classic

In cinema as in life, self-awareness can be a virtue or it can be a deadly thing. Since there’s essentially no such thing as originality, conceding that you’re working within existing parameters or with familiar formulas excuses, and can sometimes enhance, the effectiveness of a lot of necessary decisions that eventually must be made in order to tell a story. Calling too much attention to those choices, however, turns storytelling into parody, characters into punch lines, and any emotional investment that may once have existed into fodder for dismissal, if not derision.

As we already know, Chris Tucker doesn't work very often. 1995's "Friday" launched the comic actor's film career thanks to his hilarious turn as the pot loving Smokey, but while the film became a hit spawning two sequels -- "Next Friday" and "Friday After Next" -- Tucker went on to other things, mostly involving Brett Ratner. Next year will mark a decade since the last installment in the franchise, but it looks like New Line wants to take another puff.

In the last 10 years, John Singleton has made some unexpected choices, and perhaps as a result, his career has taken some unusual turns. Between 2001 and 2005 he revisited the ‘hood with “Baby Boy,” directed a big-league Hollywood sequel with “2 Fast 2 Furious,” and helmed the drama “Four Brothers,” but it’s taken six years for him to return to the director’s chair with the new thriller “Abduction.”

First Synopsis For The Film; Ned Beatty Also Part Of The Ensemble CastEven though producer/star Ben Foster has said a 2012 festival unveiling is the likely plan, we're still kinda hoping Oren Moverman's sophomore directorial effort, L.A. cop-drama "Rampart," will sneak onto 2011 calendars somehow.

Considering it's the kind of project that we'd normally run a mile from (namely, a big-budget remake of a 1980s TV show that no one really gives a shit about), we're curiously optimistic about "21 Jump Street." Like the show, which launched the career of Johnny Depp, the movie will focus on a group of fresh-faced cops who go undercover in a high school, but the new version is an R-rated action-comedy take on the material, described as "Bad Boys" meets "John Hughes."

Ice Cube and Disney? Considering the rapper/actor has mixed up his grittier film roles with stuff like "Are We There Yet?" and "The Longshots" we can't be too surprised, but the choice of project is a little big interesting as Deadline reports that Ice Cube and Disney are teaming up on the car culture feature he's been shopping titled "Chrome And Paint."
