Putting aside for a moment our comment section's belief that we're firmly in the tank for Ryan Gosling (if you'd seen our scowling faces on the way out of "Stay," "Fracture" or "All Good Things," you'd know that wasn't true...), the actor's definitely having a moment. For some time, he's seemed reluctant to become a fully fledged movie star, but next week sees him in what looks to be real crowd-pleaser in "Crazy Stupid Love," his noir flick "Drive" picked up ecstatic reviews at Cannes, and he's got a whole raft of projects lined up: another crime picture with Nicolas Winding Refn, the Bangkok-set "Only God Forgives," plus one more with Derek Cianfrance, "The Place Beyond The Pines," while he's also toplining two tentpoles, "Gangster Squad" and "Logan's Run" in the more distant future.

We are all highly anticipating the fall festival season, and, for most of us, it couldn't get here sooner. The first big news of the season, is that George Clooney's newest directorial effort, "Ides Of March," will open the Venice Film Festival. Clooney will also star as a presidential candidate alongside man of the year Ryan Gosling as his head of media. Philip Seymour Hoffman will take on a supporting role as a campaign manager with Paul Giamatti, Marisa Tomei and Evan Rachel Wood rounding it out, making the film's cast a star-studded one to watch.

With shooting already underway on George Clooney's political drama "The Ides of March," Sony already has Oscar in their eyes (and are avoiding a potential marketing hiccup) by moving the film from the previously scheduled December 2011 bow to an October 14, 2011 release. In what we imagine will be a platform release (and pretty much guaranteeing a TIFF premiere for the film), the movie will run up against some major heavyweights that weekend including "The Big Year" with Steve Martin, Jack Black and Owen Wilson, the remakes of "Footloose" and "The Thing," as well as the 3D swashbuckler "The Three Musketeers." The move out of December will also allow Sony to put all their energy in November and December in what will likely be an insane press run up for David Fincher's "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo."

It would be safe to say that The Playlist is as sick of the just-wrapped-up awards season as anyone. The endless ceremonies, often with the same results, the blind guesses, the half-informed speculation; by the time it reaches March, we're kind of furious with the whole circus.

That’s right, 2010 is already in our rear view and we’re looking far, far ahead into 2011. If 2010 was the year of audiences rewarding original, smart blockbusters (“Inception”) and punishing glossy, but empty big-budget tentpoles (“The Tourist,” “Tron: Legacy”) the new year will find studios hoping once again that comic franchises and sequels can bring in the big bucks. No less than five comic-book movies are on the way with “Thor,” “Captain America,” “Green Lantern,” “Green Hornet” and “X-Men: First Class” all swinging into theaters, while tried-and-true franchises get sequels with “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides,” “Transformers 3,” “The Hangover 2” and “Sherlock Holmes 2” among the films looking to bank on previous successes.

Even before "The Social Network" hit theaters, its cast was given enormous career boosts -- almost everyone involved picked up sought-after roles, from Andrew Garfield and Rooney Mara using the immense buzz on the film to land the leads in "Spider-Man" and "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo," to this week's news that Armie Hammer would join Leonardo DiCaprio in Clint Eastwood's "J. Edgar."
