The Playlist's 15 Most Anticipated Indies Of The Summer
So perhaps the blockbusting sturm und drang of “Iron Man 3” has you slavering for more KA-BLAMMO, in which case our Most Anticipated Summer Blockbusters is the article for you. If, however, you're already getting a slight tension headache at the prospect of weeks upon interminable weeks of tentpole releases and the din of clashing opinions that attends the redistribution of billions of dollars of wealth, never fear. The gods of counterprogramming have been especially kind this year, and there's a wide selection of upcoming, smaller-budgeted, lesser-distributed gems in which the only things that collide are intersecting lives, the only ticking time bombs are repressed emotions, the only things that break are hearts, and the only things that blow up are grandiose expectations, right in some sad sack's face. You are also much more likely to get some full-on nudity.

A few weeks ago, we took out our crystal ball and speculated on what movies might be appearing at the Cannes Film Festival when it kicks off in about six weeks or so. We made some educated guesses, ruled some other movies out and tossed some ideas around as we wait for the official announcement from organizers later this month. Well, it appears a bit of a clearer picture is emerging -- sort of -- as a handful of titles have been ruled out.

New films from Park Chan-Wook, Woody Allen, Richard Linklater and Terrence Malick are on the horizon, and joining those auteurs is none other than Pedro Almodovar, and a bigger bite of his upcoming "I'm So Excited" has landed.

Amidst the summer blockbuster season this year, there will be alternate options at the arthouse. And one of them is "I'm So Excited," the latest from Pedro Almodovar, which looks to be a complete 180 from his chilling "The Skin I Live In." And with the movie opening internationally even earlier, the promo materials continue to roll out for this one.

If Pedro Almodovar needed to do something lighter after "The Skin I Live In," and perhaps a movie not as layered as "Broken Embraces," we understand. And indeed, he's gone and knocked out a movie closer in spirit to his more anarchic early work ("Women On The Verge Of A Nervous Breakdown" is said to be a comparison point), than his later projects. "I'm So Excited" is all big colors and bold music and a new trailer has arrived to serve up another little teaser.

Pedro Almodovar's last few films include the twisty, underrated genre exercise "The Skin I Live," the meta ode to cinema "Broken Embraces," the lush "Volver" and the tough "Bad Education." No wonder he just wants to have a laugh. Next year, the Spanish auteur will drop "I'm So Excited," and if you had any doubt that it would involve The Pointer Sisters on some level, you can put your mind at ease.

An ensemble comedy that takes place mostly on a plane, Pedro Almodovar's 19th feature-length effort "I'm So Excited" ("Los Amantes Pasajeros" which translates more literally into "The Passenger's Love"), looks as if it's going to harken back to his early days of camp, kitsch and outrageous humor. At any rate, it definitely appears that it's going to pop with the director's usual riot of color. While the film was originally said to be set against a plane accident with various characters fearing for the lives and confessing their inner secrets, few other details have been provided since.

Sony Pictures Classics and Pedro Almodóvar are cinematic peanut butter and jelly, a union that is never wrong and has been fruitful for many, many years. So no duh, the arthouse shingle has once again teamed up with the helmer to distribute his next film, "I'm So Excited." No word yet if the Pointer Sisters will be on the soundtrack.
