The Worst Films Of 2013, so far, playlist
Is this the worst summer of blockbusters in a recent age or is it the best? Are “Man of Steel" arguments worth losing friendships over? Is "Southland Tales" a masterpiece as posited by generation revisionism or is it the mess critics took it for initially? Will you dare to give your money to villain mensch Adam Sandler over hero Guillermo del Toro? Debate rages on in 2013 over a variety of topics as is par for the course in the opinionated world of movie criticism and discussion. And yes, as we glance down at our watches, we realize it’s basically the midway point of the year. We already looked at what a handful of us thought were the Best Film Of The Year... So Far, and so in the Peter Travers school of thinking, we thought it might be worthwhile to look at the worst films of the year so far on a Wednesday hump day.

Upon introducing his latest film, “I’m So Excited” at the opening night of the Los Angeles Film Festival, Pedro Almodovar took care to explain that in Spanish, the title of his film has a double meaning— as he said, “horny.” And yes, the characters aboard his doomed flight are indeed, very, very libidinous. Almodovar also explained that “I’m So Excited” allows him to take a catastrophe and turn it into a party. With that idea in mind, it helps to see the bigger picture Almodovar is trying to paint with what seems like a silly sex farce on a plane.

While the rains poured last night in NYC, a few hundred slightly damp cinephiles gathered inside at the New York Times Center for the latest installment of Times Talks: A Conversation With Pedro Almodóvar. As fans of the Spanish auteur are probably already aware, Almodóvar's latest film, "I'm So Excited" (out June 28th), is the filmmaker's first foray back into madcap comedy in over two decades.

The Playlist's 15 Most Anticipated Indies Of The Summer
So perhaps the blockbusting sturm und drang of “Iron Man 3” has you slavering for more KA-BLAMMO, in which case our Most Anticipated Summer Blockbusters is the article for you. If, however, you're already getting a slight tension headache at the prospect of weeks upon interminable weeks of tentpole releases and the din of clashing opinions that attends the redistribution of billions of dollars of wealth, never fear. The gods of counterprogramming have been especially kind this year, and there's a wide selection of upcoming, smaller-budgeted, lesser-distributed gems in which the only things that collide are intersecting lives, the only ticking time bombs are repressed emotions, the only things that break are hearts, and the only things that blow up are grandiose expectations, right in some sad sack's face. You are also much more likely to get some full-on nudity.

A few weeks ago, we took out our crystal ball and speculated on what movies might be appearing at the Cannes Film Festival when it kicks off in about six weeks or so. We made some educated guesses, ruled some other movies out and tossed some ideas around as we wait for the official announcement from organizers later this month. Well, it appears a bit of a clearer picture is emerging -- sort of -- as a handful of titles have been ruled out.

And one of them is "I'm So Excited," the latest from Pedro Almodovar, which looks to be a complete 180 from his chilling "The Skin I Live In." And with the movie opening internationally even earlier, the promo materials continue to roll out for this one.

If Pedro Almodovar needed to do something lighter after "The Skin I Live In," and perhaps a movie not as layered as "Broken Embraces," we understand. And indeed, he's gone and knocked out a movie closer in spirit to his more anarchic early work ("Women On The Verge Of A Nervous Breakdown" is said to be a comparison point), than his later projects. "I'm So Excited" is all big colors and bold music and a new trailer has arrived to serve up another little teaser.

Pedro Almodovar's last few films include the twisty, underrated genre exercise "The Skin I Live," the meta ode to cinema "Broken Embraces," the lush "Volver" and the tough "Bad Education." No wonder he just wants to have a laugh. Next year, the Spanish auteur will drop "I'm So Excited," and if you had any doubt that it would involve The Pointer Sisters on some level, you can put your mind at ease.
