Editor Billy Weber Says Terrence Malick Working On DVD Director's Cut Of 'Tree Of Life'; 'Voyage Of Time' Coming In 2014

While Terrence Malick has become somewhat known for cutting people out of his movies (just yesterday we learned Michael Shannon was on the chopping block for "To The Wonder," and we have a whole feature devoted to actors who got snipped), in one case he's going back and putting footage back into a movie. You might remember that two years ago, cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki revealed that Malick went back to the 300 plus miles of footage he shot for "The Tree Of Life" with plans for a six hour version of the movie. And while the running time is yet to be determined, and we haven't really heard anything about it since, it does seem that Malick is preparing a longer cut of the movie.

While there seems to be some audience fatigue for 3D -- largely thanks to post-conversions that don't do the format justice or justify the added expense -- IMAX is the one theatrical extra most agree still provides a special experience. And particularly for films that natively use the format -- a practice slowly picking up steam -- IMAX is truly something that can't be replicated even in the most equipped home theater. And two major 2014 blockbusters are going to make that ticket price worth it.

There is no doubt that one of the biggest films of the year will be Tom Hooper's "Les Miserables." Already riding high on tremendous advance buzz, and with multiple Oscar nominations all but assured, it looks like audiences overseas are going to have an extra option when it comes to how they want to experience the film.

It looks like Warner Bros. wants to see as much green from "Man Of Steel" as they can. This summer, the cat was let out of the bag very early by an accidental post on the official IMAX page, but now it has been confirmed: Zack Snyder's Superman movie is getting spit-shined for a 3D and IMAX release (while also coming in regular 2D, of course).

There are few movies coming this fall that are as ambitious as The Wachowskis and Tom Tykwer's "Cloud Atlas." Featuring an all-star cast in multiple roles, in a story set across numerous time periods, touching a half-dozen different genres all amidst a sprawling narrative, few films are going as far out on the ledge as this one. And it's getting even bigger.

There has been something of a trend recently for re-releasing older fare in 3D, with Disney and Pixar movies, "Titanic," "Star Wars" and, next summer, "Jurassic Park" and "Independence Day" all getting the treatment. It's the new-money-for-old-rope-approach to the movies, and while these aren't guaranteed phenomenons (although "Titanic" did extraordinarily well internationally, especially in China, and "The Lion King" topped the box office in the U.S. last fall), they've been something of a no-brainer so far, allowing studios to get many millions of dollars through fairly minimal effort.

Even though Christopher Nolan -- advocate for film stock over digital and IMAX over 3D -- can present his own movies however he wants, even if Warner Bros. would've love some extra three dimension coin from "The Dark Knight Rises," that power doesn't seem to extend to movies he executive produces. As the campaign for "The Dark Knight Rises" ends you can bet that marketing for Zack Snyder's "Man Of Steel" (which Nolan is executive producing) will start ramping up in a big way (it's pretty much a no brainer that a teaser will be attached to TDKR), and one of the first bits of info is the movie is going to be put through the conversion machine.

So is IMAX the new 3D? With audiences just as likely to go to a 2D screening as one in 3D, it seems studios are now looking at IMAX as perhaps the next unique selling point for audiences. Christopher Nolan has been perhaps the biggest advocate of using the format for feature films, using the huge scale to solid effect in "The Dark Knight" and with even more planned for "The Dark Knight Rises" (whose prologue was shown only in IMAX theaters). And in case you missed it, "Batman Begins" is being converted for the format for the marathon screenings next month. And now another franchise is bringing those fancy cameras on to the set.
