Even though Christopher Nolan -- advocate for film stock over digital and IMAX over 3D -- can present his own movies however he wants, even if Warner Bros. would've love some extra three dimension coin from "The Dark Knight Rises," that power doesn't seem to extend to movies he executive produces. As the campaign for "The Dark Knight Rises" ends you can bet that marketing for Zack Snyder's "Man Of Steel" (which Nolan is executive producing) will start ramping up in a big way (it's pretty much a no brainer that a teaser will be attached to TDKR), and one of the first bits of info is the movie is going to be put through the conversion machine.

Be slightly less jealous you weren't there. Last night's "The Dark Knight Rises" screening, one of the first major screenings for movie junkateers attending today's press junket went awry in what many are already calling one of the biggest film snafu's of the year.

So is IMAX the new 3D? With audiences just as likely to go to a 2D screening as one in 3D, it seems studios are now looking at IMAX as perhaps the next unique selling point for audiences. Christopher Nolan has been perhaps the biggest advocate of using the format for feature films, using the huge scale to solid effect in "The Dark Knight" and with even more planned for "The Dark Knight Rises" (whose prologue was shown only in IMAX theaters). And in case you missed it, "Batman Begins" is being converted for the format for the marathon screenings next month. And now another franchise is bringing those fancy cameras on to the set.

Color yourself not shocked, but be content that the upgrade is not a 3D conversion. Christopher Nolan's "Batman Begins" will receive the IMAX treatment on July 19, leading up to the finale of his Batman trilogy, "The Dark Knight Rises" which opens the next day on July 20.

As if anticipation hadn't already reached a fever pitch for “The Avengers,” following its stellar reception by nearly every news outlet including ours, then consider that level increased, as news comes today that the third trailer for “The Dark Knight Rises” will unspool in front of the Joss Whedon film.

Dear Christopher Nolan, Brad Bird & J.J. Abrams: David Fincher Ain't Convinced Of Shooting In IMAX

Once mostly used for nature and history documentaries, the IMAX format has made the leap to the multiplex with Christopher Nolan bringing it boldly to his Batman franchise, Brad Bird using it to frame Ethan Hunt on his latest globe trotting adventure and J.J. Abrams considering sending the Enterprise through outer space on massive big screen size. And while it's too soon to tell if the industry will embrace the format the way they have 3D (granted, there are a few technological hurdles that need to be cleared before that can happen), one filmmaker isn't yet convinced of the merits of IMAX.
