If you go to the movie theater this weekend, you may see something that surprises you. People. After a few weeks of waning, sagging box office numbers, the R-rated, 3D "Immortals" arrived last weekend and performed well beyond expectations to take the top spot. Unfortunately, they're up against the Twihards who are expecting to power 'Breaking Dawn' to well over $100 million in ticket sales and likely meaning a precipitous second week drop for "Immortals." Eager to keep from falling too hard, "Immortals" has conjured up a brand new spot aimed at one demographic only: men.

11/11/11! Did you make a wish? I was writing this column at 11:11 a.m. and missed it by one minute. Oh well, I don't much go in for that superstitious stuff, but I hope all your 11:11 wishes and hopes and dreams come true. This weekend at the theater is a weird mix of prestige and flat out horrible crap. For every "J. Edgar," you get a "Jack and Jill;" for every "Melancholia," there's an "Immortals." What are you gonna do?!

And Five We're Worried About/DreadingWith the Toronto International Film Festival now over, the dust is beginning to settle on 2011 and we're moving into the final stage of the fall movie season. Many, if not most, of autumn's Oscar season big hitters have now been revealed, leaving principally commercial fare, and a few prestige-y films that are rushing towards completion. As ever, the benefits of opening your Christmas presents early is a mixed bag; it means that we're able to firmly recommend some big fall films, movies like "Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy," "Shame" and "We Need To Talk About Kevin." It means we can also tell you to be wary of the likes of "W.E." and "Butter."

Plus Glimpses Of 'Contraband,' 'The Raven' & 'Immortals'After a mixed summer ("Fast Five" and "Bridesmaids" performed well over expectations, "Cowboys and Aliens" well under them), it's interesting to see where Universal goEs from here, considering recent changes in management and all. They've got a fairly strong commercial line-up heading into the end of 2011 and the start of 2012, and gave punters a first look at many of those films in London's O2 arena as part of the Empire Big Screen event.

Comic-Con '11: After Sony’s "The Amazing Spider-Man" presentation Friday afternoon, Comic-Con attendees appeared to have relatively few other films or properties to get excited about. But Relativity Media maximized the potential of their upcoming sword-and-sandal opus "Immortals" with a panel featuring cast and crew members as well as a presentation of some footage which, as one colleague put it, felt about perfect for screening in the convention’s centerpiece showroom, whether or not its charm translates to commercial success down the road.

While during the "Immortals" panel in Hall H at Comic-Con 2011, lead actor Henry Cavill remained relatively quiet and stayed mostly mum on his upcoming role of a lifetime as Superman in Zack Snyder's "Man of Steel," he did allow that the story is "one of the best scripts I’ve ever read.”
