Lake Bell, In A World
"I'm a trailer fanatic. If I need to go to my happy place, I just go to Apple Trailers. If I go to the movie and miss the trailers, I'll be pissed at everyone who made me late," Lake Bell told us in an interview earlier this year. And indeed, she's taken that passion for those two minute bursts of advertising to make her featuring length directorial debut "In A World..." and it looks like a charmer.

Lake Bell
Sundance London was something of a homecoming for actress/writer/director/producer Lake Bell. Though born in New York, Bell began her career studying acting at London's Rose Bruford College, a stone's throw away from the O2 complex where the festival was taking place. And what better place could there be for the international premiere of the feature directorial debut from the star, who's consistently impressed both in TV roles like "How To Make It In America" and "Children's Hospital," and on the big screen in the likes of "It's Complicated" and "Pride & Glory."

The trouble with being multi-talented is that you can't be in more than one place at once. And so it is with Lake Bell. The actress has been a reliable scene-stealer over the last decade or so, but she's been mostly absent from our screens of late, having spent much of the last few years prepping her thoroughly enjoyable directorial debut "In A World..." (she was even missing from much of the last season of the excellent "Children's Hospital," although she directed a couple of episodes).

One of the worst things you could say about a comedy is usually that it has a wide appeal. The most interesting comedies are the ones that tend to be hyper-specific, focused on an insular world of some kind (think '70s newsrooms in “Anchorman” or '80s summer camp in “Wet Hot American Summer”), while the ones pitched to the widest audience end up having storylines like “Hardworking ad executive can’t seem to get her love life together!” Just ask Judd Apatow, who learned on “Freaks & Geeks” that the more specific something is, the more it tends to resonate.
