Frequently namechecked by critics, fellow actors and directors as one of the greatest screen actors alive, French actress Isabelle Huppert is the subject of the first of a series of impressive tributes to be made at this year’s Marrakech International Film Festival. She is also being honoured here by an eclectic, 11-movie sampling of her back catalogue, including 1980 Gerard Depardieu-starrer “Loulou”; Michael Haneke’s “The Piano Teacher,” for which she won the second of her two Best Actress awards in Cannes; and her more recent work with Brillante Mendoza and Hong Sang-soo, “Captive” and “In Another Country.”

Well, Thanksgiving has barely started and the first top ten list of 2012 has arrived from the snooty folks (kidding guys, we love you) at French movie bible Cahiers Du Cinema, and as usual, it's pretty...eclectic...

Get your voting cards ready, folks!

Tracking the festival circuit can sometimes be a frustrating venture as distribution deals (or lack thereof) can negate anticipation and excitement. For smaller-name films, foreign ones in particular, it's sometimes a matter of years before a far away festival hit is released locally. American fans of South Korean helmer Hong Sang-soo and Scotsman Ken Loach can rejoice, however, as the duo's latest films from Cannes have now secured stateside distribution deals.

Heaviness tends to dominate the Cannes Film Festival, and this year is no different. Death ("Amour"), doubt ("The Hunt"), losing limbs ("Rust And Bone") and religious fanaticism ("Beyond The Hills") are just some of themes that have cropped up so far as we get to the halfway point of the fest. And while Hong Sang-soo's "In Another Country" won't win any points for examining tough subject matter, the deceptively simple film is a decent breath of fresh of air in a lineup of Important Movies.

While Berlin gears up to take place in about a week, with SXSW following next month, all eyes are on Cannes in May. Over the next couple of months, rumor, speculation and, eventually, official confirmation will arrive about who will be making the trek to the Croisette. Walter Salles' "On The Road" was the first movie this year to get the ball rolling on the possibility of a red carpet appearance, and now a Korean auteur looks primed to make his way back to France.
