Blackhat
Would you prefer Chris Hemsworth nimbly sprinting or wearily gazing? No need to choose, you can have both with two new images from the leading man’s slate of early 2015 projects. In a still from Michael Mann’s “Black Hat,” he looks dapper in a bulletproof vest as he presumably gives chase to malignant international cyber criminals, while in an image from Ron Howard’s “Heart of the Sea,” he is cologne ad-worthy, making us worry slightly less about the period piece’s appeal to the masses.

For a moment there, it looked like Ben Whishaw was going to do some tentpole hopping. After appearing last fall as the new Q in "Skyfall," the actor was being eyed for Steven Spielberg's "Robopocalypse" -- until the filmmaker put it on hold indefinitely. Well, it was a minor blip for Whishaw who filmed Terry Gilliam's "The Zero Theorem" which is coming to the Venice Film Festival, and is now being eyed for a part in Ron Howard's next movie.

Despite the festering wound that was “Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter,” the film’s two leads haven’t taken much of a hit as both have landed some big roles.

You couldn’t read a review of “The Impossible” without reading about Tom Holland’s mature-beyond-his-years performance as the eldest son. Many said he was robbed of an Oscar nod but high-profile offers are a pretty good consolation prize and Holland will be receiving plenty of those. The young British actor has just signed on to Ron Howard’s based-on-true-story whaling picture “In The Heart Of The Sea” opposite Chris Hemsworth. Holland also recently wrapped “How I Live Now” with Saoirse Ronan and the Steven Knight thriller “Locke” with Tom Hardy.

While his Formula 1 racing drama “Rush” doesn’t surface until the fall, it seems that Ron Howard was impressed with his leading man, as Vulture is reporting that the “Apollo 13” helmer is circling a project that would reunite him with Chris Hemsworth.

Can Chris Hemsworth graduate from franchise star to leading man in dramatic fare? The question is wide open right now, but whether audiences warm to him without the hammer of Thor or riding shotgun with Kristen Stewart through fairy tales remains to be seen. His first test via the excellent meta-horror flick "The Cabin In The Woods" didn't really work, and he'll get another shot later this year when the "Red Dawn" remake finally hits theaters. But his first real test will be in Ron Howard's racing drama "Rush" and should that go well, this will likely follow.
