While director Roland Emmerich has his latest summer blockbuster “White House Down” to concern himself with, he can’t escape the question that inevitably follows him to every media event he attends -- what’s up with the sequel to “Independence Day”? The Daily News recently caught up with Emmerich to get the latest scoop on the often suggested sequel, and this time, he revealed that a certain iconic star would not be returning.

Oh, I guess we're still talking about this. It seems that every six months to year, talk of the forever developing "Independence Day" sequels -- yes, there are two, and at one point they were rumored to shoot back-to-back. Well, they're apparently called "ID Forever," and talking to press today about this summer's explosion-y "White House Down" (the trailer is arriving imminently), Roland Emmerich dropped some tiny morsels about the followups to his alien invasion blockbuster.

We're nine days into 2013, so might as well put in the annual "Independence Day" sequel rumors. For the past few years, a followup to the blockbuster July 4th hit has been talked about, without anything concrete ever actually happening. Roland Emmerich has long said he would be game, but the sticking point seems to be Will Smith, who Fox apparently wants to sign off on everything before shooting begins, so that the production fiasco that accompanied "Men In Black 3" doesn't replicate here. But what if Big Willie doesn't want to do it? No problem.

Ironically, some of us were just having this conversation this morning. Would 20th Century Fox rush its "X-Men: First Class" sequel into production like they did in 2010 for its 2011 release (there was about an eight-month window to shoot and edit the picture and the film suffered because of it, but miraculously wasn't a total disaster)? The answer, thankfully, is no. Fox has set July 18, 2014 as the release date for their untitled sequel to "X-Men: First Class." Original director Matthew Vaughn will be on board once again with all of the original cast, including Micheal Fassbender, James McAvoy, Jennifer Lawrence, Nicholas Hoult and many more (they all signed multi-picture deals after all). That should give them plenty of time to write a proper screenplay and not a mediocre one that the cast has to elevate (which was the case with the original).
