The year 2013 may have flew by fast, but not if you’re a fan of the Coen Brothers. The first trailer for “Inside Llewyn Davis” dropped this past January, then the film had its first private screening the following month, and then made its festival premiere at Cannes in May. Since then, unless you’ve been lucky enough to see it during its festival run, you have had to wait throughout the entire calendar year to catch a glimpse of this film. Thankfully, a whole boatload of promotional materials have just been dropped so you can keep yourself occupied until the film finally lands at a theater near you.

To the prognosti-box! The first statues have been handed out and the Oscar race has changed! (At least for his evening until the next batch of trophies roll around). The Gotham Awards were handed out tonight in New York City and one highly touted film and another indie upstart led the pack of those taking home statues to fill up their mantle.

The Coen Brothers' glorious "Inside Llewyn Davis" hits theaters at long last this week and while its award prospects in general are somewhat on the tightrope, some of its better chances lie in the design categories: the beautifully realized world of early 1960s New York has a good chance of nominations in the Production Design and Costume Design categories. As such, we're going to spotlight these areas this week, along with their less-loved little brother, Make-Up and Hairstyling.

Inside Llewyn Davis
While we live in a culture where numerous clips, photos and more land online weeks and months before a movie hits theaters, sometimes things are best experienced cold. And while you've likely already heard some rumblings about the performance of "Please Mr. Kennedy" in "Inside Llewyn Davis," if you can wait, we urge you to watch it first in the actual movie.

Garnering massive notices from nearly every festival that it’s played, it was with a bit of puzzlement then that “Inside Llewyn Davis” only received two Independent Spirit Award nominations. We’re thinking the Golden Globes and Oscars are more the Coen Brothers’ ballpark anyway, but in the absence of any recent directing or screenplay nominations for their work, we’ve got two new clips from the film to showcase the consistent quality of both elements.

Inside Llewyn Davis
It's cold out, he doesn't have a winter coat, his record label isn't pushing his solo record, the folk scene is changing around him and his ex-girlfriend is pregnant. Things aren't going so well for Llewyn Davis but through thick and thin, the musician has his music and it's the thread that strings together "Inside Llewyn Davis," the Coen brothers' beautifully, hilariously melancholy look at one artist trying to break through.

Inside Llewyn Davis
Among the many accomplishments that the Coen Brothers can lay claim to (in addition to their countless accolades, awards and undeniable selection of impeccable films), it's that they take the most unlikely of concepts and manage to turn them into crowd-pleasing hits. A movie about a folk singer in the '60s struggling and trying to make it doesn't exactly scream a fun night at the movies on a Saturday night, on the page. But in execution, "Inside Llewyn Davis" is a hilarious, music driven grand time that's also smartly observed and moving too.

Inside Llewyn Davis
Generally, the musical performance part of the Oscar show doubles as our bathroom break, as it's usually some forgettable songs coupled with some kind of bizarre choreography. But should things pan out as they should (at least we hope), in a few months from now, we'll be seeing Oscar Isaac, perhaps Marcus Mumford and a few more folks from "Inside Llewyn Davis" belting out a tune onstage at the Dolby Theater and you can bet we'll be watching. Filled with beautiful renditions of folk classics as well as one roof raising original number, the soundtrack to the movie is not just one of year's best, it's also just some of the finest tunes you'll hear anywhere in 2013. And now you can check it out in full.
