Neighbors
While our review of the frat comedy “Neighbors” is quite glowing and the R-Rated laffer was a major hit this spring, not all of us agree that the comedy is all that (this writer anyhow). However, one thing that no human on the planet can argue about the movie, full stop: Rose Byrne is excellent in it, probably the best part of the movie and a total scene stealer evidently born for comedy. And sure, we’ve seen her in comedy before, most memorably in “Bridesmaids,” and “Get Him To The Greek,” but in “Neighbors” Byrne has a mix of charm and go-for-brokeness that is vastly appealing.

Stuntman and sometimes actor Nash Edgerton (yep, brother of Joel Edgerton and part of the Blue Tongue Films collective) has earned the most acclaim for his directorial efforts, fare such as 2008's "The Square" or the recent short "Bear." And now he's lining up a project that could see him getting his biggest profile yet.

Robert Schwentke Insurgent
Summit are really confident that everyone is going to see their big, juicy YA adaptation "Divergent" next month. Or they're at least hoping that their confidence and premature announcement that a sequel is coming will encourage audiences to a buy a ticket. Either way, they're making plans so that they're prepared when "Divergent" becomes an (inevitable?) hit film. And they are pinning their hopes on the guy who directed "R.I.P.D." to keep the franchise moving.

Divergent
Quick, name a modern YA franchise that has succeeded since the "Twilight" juggernaut stormed into theaters and forced every scared-stiff, looking-over-their-shoulder studio exec to scramble for his/her own would-be moneymaking property? For every 'Hunger Games,' that has triumphed, there has been a "Mortal Instruments: City Of Bones," (initially shuttered, but limping back for a sequel), "Beautiful Creatures" (dead on arrival), "The Host" (a laughable worst-of-year dud), "The Seventh Son" (delayed by more than two years) and the Weinstein Company's "Vampire Academy" looks as if it was concocted by Friedberg and Seltzer.

Such is the current cinema culture that a movie can be months away from release and talk and plans will already be underway for a sequel. That goes double for franchise properties, so it's not a shock that Summit Entertainment is already looking beyond their YA series starter "Divergent." Banking on it being a hit, or at least economically successful enough to warrant a followup, and work is already starting on the sequel "Insurgent." But don't expect director Neil Burger to be there.
