Into The Woods
After a bit of back and forth by Stephen Sondheim over the changes made to his musical "Into The Woods" for Disney's big screen, star-studded version, he's ultimately behind the "first-rate" production, and now the studio can push on with promoting the film. And today they've dropped a handful of new images to take you in the alternate fairy tale world you'll experience later this year.

In a recent story in The New Yorker, Stephen Sondheim had a lot to say about Disney's take on his musical "Into The Woods." While he seemed pragmatic about the whole thing, citing the realities of Disney having to deliver something for families and a mainstream audience, Sondheim has come out today a lot more supportive about the project.

A twisted take on classic fairy tales, featuring no shortage of sexual innuendo and other not-family-friendly deeds, it was not a matter of what Disney would change in their big screen adaptation of "Into The Woods," but how much of it would get tweaked. Well, according to the musical's original writer Stephen Sondheim, a fair bit.

Frankly, it should be criminal how talented Meryl Streep is, and certainly, there will never be another one like her. The three-time Oscar winner has a Wikipedia page dedicated to her various nominations and honors, and from drama to comedy to musicals, she's not only done it all, she's knocked it out the park more often than not. So next her on list of things to do? Play a witch in a Disney musical.

And now another actress who recently showed off her pipes is getting a shot.

Even we weren't big Sondheim fans, we're starting to suspect that we'd be getting excited about "Into The Woods" regardless. "Chicago" and "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides" director Rob Marshall's been prepping his film version of Stephen Sondheim's fairy tale deconstruction for over a year now, but has started lining up a cast in recent weeks, and it's looking fairly spectacular.

Stephen Sondheim has never been an easy sell on screen. The Broadway composer's work is complex and rich in a way that doesn't easily lend itself to big-screen transitions, and outside of early work like "West Side Story" and "Gypsy," few of his shows have made it to the big screen -- "A Little Night Music" and Tim Burton's "Sweeney Todd" being the major exceptions. Given its fairy tale subject matter, "Into the Woods" always seemed like one of the more obvious contenders to make it to the movies, with Steven Spielberg, Sam Mendes and Penny Marshall among the filmmakers who've flirted with the idea in the past.
