It just wouldn’t be Comic-Con without Marvel. New York Comic Con welcomed Marvel Studios to present footage from Joss Whedon‘s “The Avengers,” with comedian Chris Hardwick hosting a panel of Marvel head Kevin Feige and actors Colbie Smulders, Clark Gregg, Tom Hiddelston, Chris Evans and surprise guest Mark Ruffalo.

You may or may not have heard, but this weekend in Los Angeles, the L.A. Times geek blog, Hero Complex held its own little festival. Jon Favreau and HC webmaster Geoff Boucher were scheduled to talk about Favreau's career-making turn as the director behind 2008's wildly successful, "Iron Man" on Sunday night at the Chinese 6 Theatre in Hollywood and a little unannounced guest appeared: none other than Tony Stark himself, Robert Downey Jr.

Superhero movie fans were pretty puzzled a few weeks ago when it was announced that Drew Pearce would be penning the script for "Iron Man 3." Nothing against Pearce (who's seen success with the U.K. superhero comedy series "No Heroics"), but when Marvel Studios appointed Shane Black as director of the upcoming threequel, most people assumed he'd also be writing the script as well.

Talk about taking the one element nearly every comic fan otherwise was excited about, and tossing it out the window. When Shane Black was hired on direct "Iron Man 3," fans hoped that Marvel, known for making their presence heavily felt in every step of way, would at least concede to let the practically legendary writer -- “Lethal Weapon” and “The Last Boy Scout” rank in his credits -- shape the script. He's already directed Robert Downey Jr. in "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang," a comeback vehicle for both of them, so it seemed like an no brainer. And earlier this month, Black told an audience at the Omaha Film Festival that he would be writing the script. Guess no one at Marvel got the memo.

It's hasn't been all that long since Jon Favreau confirmed that he wouldn't be returning to the franchise that made his name: after reportedly feuding with Marvel on "Iron Man 2," the former-Pete-from-"Friends" opted to helm the Disney blockbuster-in-waiting "Magic Kingdom" over the third installment of the metal-suited comic book hero. But in an unusually streamlined procedure, "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang" writer/director Shane Black was officially hired in a directing capacity a few weeks back (Oscar-winner Tom Hooper was also offered the director's chair earlier).

Fans Of Off-Center Close Ups Of Robert Downey Jr Reportedly DisappointedIn terms of catapulting yourself onto the A-list, there are few better ways of doing it than by directing a huge commercial success that's nominated for more Oscars than any other film this year. Two years ago, 38-year-old British director Tom Hooper was, for the most part, a well-regarded TV director; one mostly forgotten feature credit to his name (the South African drama "Red Dust," with Hilary Swank and Chiwetel Ejiofor), but mostly acclaimed TV dramas like "Longford," "John Adams," "Prime Suspect" and the Helen Mirren vehicle "Elizabeth I," for which he won an Emmy.

After an overstuffed and generally underwhelming “Iron Man 2” and with director Jon Favreau officially out the door, we weren’t sure we wanted to sit through the contractually obligated third installment of the blockbuster franchise. However, Marvel might be about to change our minds.

Don't Expect Any Marvel Trash TalkingSo why did Jon Favreau leave the "Iron Man" franchise, confirming earlier today that he won't be directing "Iron Man 3" which was already set for a May, 2013 release? Let's recap, Marvel had already nearly lost him on "Iron Man 2" when they offered him an insultingly low fee for the sequel, they also low-balled Mickey Rourke and were so sick of Terrence Howard's demands that they axed him and replaced him with Don Cheadle.

We can't say this news is really all that surprising, but Vulture reports that Jon Favreau will not be directing "Iron Man 3."
