A perhaps unexpected offering to kick off this fortnight of high-profile international, arthouse and independent filmmaking, Baz Luhrmann's "The Great Gatsby" will nonetheless burst open the Cannes Film Festival later tonight like a giant glitter-and-feather-filled pinata. Which means that this morning was all about the real reason the film snagged its prestigious opening slot: the dazzling constellation of stars it brings in its wake to walk the red carpet, get their pictures taken and talk up the film in handy soundbite format to the assembled roiling masses of journalists at the press conference.

This week sees the DVD and Blu-ray release of "Bachelorette" starring Kirsten Dunst, Isla Fisher, Lizzy Caplan and Rebel Wilson. This raunchy, unflinching, darkly comic indie was written and directed by Leslye Headland ("Terriers") and follows three best friends (Caplan, Fisher, Dunst) who are invited to act as bridesmaids at the wedding of a girl (Wilson) they called “Pigface” in high school.

Louis Leterrier has proved himself to be solid visualist, with a solid sense of action choreography but his films thus far haven't quite let him fully flex his directorial muscles. However, this latest, the magician heist thriller "Now You See Me" is not only boasting a pretty great premise, but has also attracted a solid cast thus far including Jesse Eisenberg, Melanie Laurent, Mark Ruffalo and Morgan Freeman, but a minor casting shakeup is underway.

It seems like nowadays, especially in our gimme-gimme-gimme, now-now-now society of instant, hyperlinked gratification, that when a movie’s release is delayed or postponed, that it takes on a mystical dimension of importance and fascination. This leads to endless speculation about why the film hasn’t made its way to (domestic) theaters yet; what’s the reason behind the hold-up? In the in-between time, a new reputation for the film has already been forged, one based on tenuous material and (possibly) overseas reviews. In the case of John Landis’ “Burke & Hare,” which was released almost a year ago in England, the word was that the film was something of a return to form.

Baz Luhrmann Casts Joel Edgerton As Tom Buchanan In 'The Great Gatsby'

The anointment of Joel Edgerton as a freshly minted A-lister looks to be complete. The Australian actor seemed to be on the brink of something for a decade, but 2011 may be the year in which the stars align: his small, but pivotal role in "Animal Kingdom" last year kicked off a string of new gigs, including the male lead in the prequel/reboot/preboot of "The Thing," opposite Mary Elizabeth Winstead, the co-lead opposite Jennifer Garner in "The Odd Life of Timothy Green," and starring across from Tom Hardy in MMA drama "Warrior," a film that's picked up major buzz from early screenings, with some even whispering that it could be an awards contender.

The list of go-to names for big roles, particularly for male leads, is an ever-changing one. We ran down a list last year, but even in the few months since then, new names have come to the forefront, and some have jumped to the front of the queue. "Thor" star Chris Hemsworth, for instance, who just locked down the title role opposite Kristen Stewart in "Snow White and the Huntsman," is a newbie, while his co-star in the forthcoming film, "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides" romantic lead Sam Clafin, not only bagged the prince part in the fairy tale, but also the lead in would-be-'Harry Potter'-replacement franchise "The Seventh Son," with Jeff Bridges and Julianne Moore.

With "The Hangover" proving to studios that an R-rated comedy can bring in the big bucks, executives are now trying the concept with a female twist. "Bridesmaids" -- which recently unspooled at SXSW and met our expectations head on -- will be the first R-rated, women driven comedy in ages but it won't be the last. Isla Fisher has been attached for a while now to "Desperados," a raunchy road trip comedy and it looks like the project is settling on a pretty unlikely director.

Review: 'Rango' Is A Sweetly Surreal Animated Western

It's strange to think that Gore Verbinski, an accomplished visual stylist who began in commercials (he was responsible for those "Bud-weis-er" talking bullfrog ads), would want to follow up the daunting and problem-plagued back-to-back shoots of the two latter 'Pirates of the Caribbean' movies with an animated film. Not only are animated films notoriously time-consuming and hard to crack, but this would be his first fully animated film and the debut feature film from Industrial Light & Magic, George Lucas' wizardly visual effects house. And this was supposed to be his "small" movie.
