This week has finally seen some of the awards season's last big question marks unspool, with early (although vaguely unofficial) screenings of "War Horse" and "Young Adult" taking place (the latter has been conducting a series of pop-up showings around the country). And perhaps the most intriguing, at least because of the degree to which the cards have been held close to the chest, is this year's AFI Festival opener, Clint Eastwood's "J. Edgar." The veteran actor/director is coming off a patchy recent run, with last year's "Hereafter" arguably his worst ever directorial effort, and the film had remained unscreened for anybody, despite opening next Wednesday.

One of the few remaining pieces in the upcoming award season puzzle will soon be uncovered with the premiere of "J. Edgar" at the AFI Fest now only a week away with its general release due a week after that. Can Clint Eastwood bounce straight back from "Hereafter" and find his way into voters' minds again? How will Leonardo DiCaprio fare as the Bulldog Hoover? And can Dustin Lance Black prove his Oscar win for "Milk" wasn't a fluke?

Along with "Young Adult" and "Extremely Loud And Incredibly Close," Clint Eastwood's "J. Edgar" is one of the few big remaining Oscar question marks for this year's awards season. And while the film penned by “Milk” screenwriter Dustin Lance Black boasts a solid ensemble supporting cast that includes Armie Hammer, Naomi Watts, Ed Westwick, Damon Herriman, Judi Dench, Ken Howard, Jeffrey Donovan and Stephen Root, these first posters make it very clear who the spotlight will be on.

One of the key question marks in this year's Oscar season, one conspicuously absent from our most anticipated post-fall film festival picks feature published this morning, is Clint Eastwood's "J. Edgar," his decades-spanning drama about the controversial head of the FBI, J. Edgar Hoover.

While it was previously reported that Clint Eastwood was unlikely to make any major festival appearances in the run up to the release of his latest effort "J. Edgar," the director will now give it a splashy red carpet premiere at the AFI Fest a few days before it rolls out to multiplexes across the country.

Plus New Photos Of Sarah Jessica Parker, Lea Michele & Sofia Vergara In 'New Year's Eve'We suppose she wasn't meant to be glamorous or pretty in this picture. WB has released a first look photo of Naomi Watts in Clint Eastwood's biopic "J. Edgar" starring Leonardo DiCaprio, and the actress looks positively dowdy and frumpy. That's by design. She's playing Helen Gandy, a Justice Department file clerk who ended up being Hoover’s personal secretary. Not the sexiest role in the film, though in one version of Dustin Lance Black's screenplay, if we recall correctly, there is one brief sequence where she and Hoover attempt to go out on a date, which doesn't really work out. Following Hoover's death in 1972, Gandy spent weeks destroying his personal file, thought to be where the most incriminating material he used to manipulate and control the most powerful figures in Washington was kept, though we're pretty sure Eastwood's drama won't extend that far into his history.

Last night, we got our first taste of Leonardo DiCaprio in Clint Eastwood's "J. Edgar" and while these new pics from EW don't do much to sway us from the opinion that the actor looks more like himself than he does Hoover, we've also yet to see the prosthetic work that will age the actor 50 years over the course of the film. As befits one of the most controversial Americans in history, the film itself will touch on his long-rumored closeted homosexuality, but don't expect the filmmakers to give you a definite answer on the matter.
