Oh yeah, right. This movie. We sort of keep forgetting it's happening, but after a recent title change, "Jack The Giant Slayer" is now getting ready to debut this spring after being bumped off its originally planned date this summer. So, is 'Slayer' ready to rumble?

Do you remember that Bryan Singer has a new movie called "Jack The Giant Killer" coming out? Yeah, we don't either. So it's probably not a big deal that Warner Bros. is changing -- well, tweaking -- the title, or moving the release date (again), because it's not like many folks had marked this one down on the calendar.

Heading out of 2011 and into 2012, the executives and bookkeepers at Warner Bros. began taking a hard look at the numbers of a handful of projects on their slate, and they didn't like what they saw. The long developing remake of "Akira," which was gearing up to shoot this spring, seemed to be in an endless casting/testing cycle and the film, which had already stalled out once in 2011 when orignial director Albert Hughes left, had its pre-production offices closed at the start of the month. That's not all. David Dobkin's fantasy pic "Arthur & Lancelot," which was set to star Joel Kinnaman and Kit Harington, was also put on hold. The studio encouraged the director to take the project elsewhere due to the budget going over by a full three figure number. And it looks like WB is no hurry to revive it.

To quote Matt Damon in a recent episode of KCRW's The Business, after the Bennifer flap of the early aughts, his "hetero lifemate" Ben Affleck had to work twice as hard to frame his name back into a respectable part of the film industry. "He was very sober about what it meant for his career," Damon said. "He knew he was going to go into the penalty box for an undetermined amount of time. The worst place you can be is where you're selling magazines and not movie tickets. That's purgatory."

Well, you can't say that Bryan Singer's "Jack the Giant Killer" isn't delivering what the title implies. Yes, it's a movie based on the classic fairy tale, for better or worse, and this first trailer promises a movie somewhere between the ridiculounsness of "Mirror Mirror" and the awesomeness of "Snow White and the Huntsmen."

We're never one to begrudge anyone a payday, particularly when they're a character actor who's toiled away in theater and TV for years and who's finally managed to get a big break. Which is why we're pleased to see Eddie Marsan working so consistently these days. The actor's been working since the late 80s, but the last decade has seen him go from strength to strength -- kicking off with serious, auteur-driven pictures like "Gangs of New York" and "21 Grams," he's gone on to crop up in the likes of "Mission Impossible 3," "Miami Vice," "Hancock" and "Sherlock Holmes," while still turning out terrific performances in the indie world, particularly with Mike Leigh, in "Vera Drake" and "Happy-Go-Lucky."

The new lease on life that Ian McShane's career seems to have found in the last decade or so never stops being amusing to those of us who best remember him as the roguish, massively-coiffed East Anglian antiques dealer in the 1980s/1990s BBC TV series "Lovejoy." Of course, most audiences are entirely unaware of his past, despite his career stretching back half a century that has seen the actor appear in "Magnum P.I" "Roots" and "Dallas" in addition to his extensive stage work.
