Sequels! It's taken a while, but wildly successful movies, from different sides of the tracks, are now getting ready to return in front of the cameras as sequels, and even better, they've got some helmers to do with it. So, let's dive in.

After proving he could successfully helm and help revive a beloved franchise in "The Muppets," it looks like James Bobin will be getting an opportunity to direct yet another musical. This time, it will be from a script he wrote himself.

Let's get this out of the way first and let's not be super alarmist about it (aka don't panic Miss Piggy and Kermit fans). There's nothing super concrete that says "The Muppets" sequel has been delayed, scrapped, etc. However, in a new Variety report about "The Muppets" director James Bobin, the trade says it's unclear where the sequel is at in its development and the filmmaker could be taking another gig first.

When you talk dream projects that you wish could become resurrected -- something we do for shits and giggles from time to time -- very high on our list is John Kennedy Toole's posthumously-published, picaresque novel "A Confederacy of Dunces" (published in 1980, eleven years after the author's suicide at the age of 32). Steven Soderbergh and Scott Kramer (producer for "The Limey") wrote a screenplay in the late '90s (we still have a copy lying around somewhere) and in the early aughts, they attached David Gordon Green to direct circa "Undertow," and names like Will Ferrell, Mos Def, and Drew Barrymore circulated for the lead roles (Barrymore would have co-produced).

While the $153 million worldwide take for "The Muppets" probably was a bit below the numbers Disney were looking for with their franchise reboot, there are some things to note. Of all the Muppet movies so far, that film was the most financially successful at the box office, and on a purely creative/enjoyment level, we're not so sure any of the other films matched the wit and warmth that Jason Segel and Nicholas Stoller brought to their take on the iconic characters. But either way, Disney is happy and the good news is that we're going to be seeing more of our felt-covered friends soon.

It's not been a banner year for The Playlist's inner child. We've been spoiled in recent years, admittedly, but even the better kids flicks of the year so far, like "Rango" and "Kung Fu Panda 2," seem aimed at adults more than children, drawing on the Western and martial arts genres, but neglecting the sense of inner wonder that's so necessary, leaving "Super 8" as the only film that's really scratched that particular itch.

With David Gordon Green turning from indie auteur to something of a comedy savant, it seems like it's creating a ripple effect on those around him. While "Your Highness" is due in theaters this Friday with "The Sitter" following later this year, on December 9th, it looks like the writers of that flim are getting an early Christmas gift.
