The Phoney War phase of the awards season is starting to come to an end: we've already had nominations from smaller precursors like the Gotham Awards and the British Independent Film Awards, and in a little over two weeks, things will get underway properly with the New York Film Critics Awards and the National Board of Review Awards, kicking off a month full of nominees and winners ahead of the opening of Oscar voting on December 27th.

Homefront
"Homefront," a movie we had no idea even existed until literally fifteen minutes ago, sounds kind of enjoyable in a junky, nothing-else-is-playing kind of way. It stars Jason Statham, king of B-grade action movies, as a former DEA agent who returns to his home down only to get hassled by a drug kingpin named gator (James Franco, of course). And if all of that wasn't enough to get your tough guy appreciation levels up, the movie was written by none other than Sylvester Stallone, whose script is based on a novel by Chuck Hogan ("The Town"). And now the first photos from the November release have debuted courtesy of USA Today. Testosterone-y!

Lovelace
Do you appreciate a biopic cataloguing the trials and tribulations of fame: abusive relationships, drugs, exploitation, etc.? Are you a closeted connoisseur (or not-so-closeted) of vintage porn, particularly prime 1970s skin flicks? Whether either or both (they're not mutually exclusive), you're in luck this Friday when the Linda Lovelace biopic "Lovelace" hits theaters. (Check out our Berlin review here.)

So the 2013 Cannes lineup has finally been unveiled and as usual, there were a fair few surprise inclusions, a fair few snubby exclusions/category decisions, and some mildly oh!-inducing title changes. The majority of our firm predictions made it in (the Coens, Soderbergh, Farhadi, Sorrentino, Gray, Refn, Denis, Coppola among others) but sometimes into surprising sections, while a couple of films we had down as possibilities or longer shots paid off. So now that we know the lineup from G ('Gatsby' -- opening film) to Z ("Zulu" -- closing film) -- and it's a fairly U.S.-friendly list for Jury President Steven Spielberg to preside over -- lets dive right in and talk about the more eyebrow-raising moments from this morning's announcement.

The last few actioners in Jason Statham's CV have been pretty disappointing, box office-wise. But can you blame the audience? It's hard to find the proper enemy for the musclebound Brit, with him taking out Aiden GIllen in "Blitz," smacking up faceless mafia goons in "Safe" and eating Clive Owen's lunch in "Killer Elite." But thanks to an assist from "The Expendables" buddy Sylvester Stallone, Statham's about to match up with Hollywood's great puzzle box that is James Franco.

We're not sure that there was a bigger surprise this year than "Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes." A tired franchise, from a creative-interference-happy studio, with a green director and a plot straight from "Deep Blue Sea?" Even without the initially unpromising trailers, it looked like a late-summer flop. But happily, it was nothing of the kind: the film became easily the warmest-received blockbusters of the summer, launched director Rupert Wyatt onto the A-list, and has taken an impressive $400 million haul; not bad for a film that allegedly cost less than many of its tentpole competitors. A franchise was (re)born.
