The Wolverine
Many audiences just won't give a damn or notice and that's completely valid, but for the more discerning, shall we say, modern movie obsessive, director James Mangold's credibility is really going to take a hit if "The Wolverine" isn't at least a sub-decent movie. The jury's still out of course, but all the recent trailers have been worrisome and iffy-looking; perhaps just a small notch above the execrable "X-Men Origins: Wolverine." The added scrutiny and expectations comes from Mangold himself and Hugh Jackman to a degree. Not only were the director and star actively campaigning for the film months before it was ready -- taking to YouTube to answer questions about the film during production -- they were actively attempting to change the narrative of what came before. In short: don't worry about "X-Men Origins: Wolverine," we're starting over, doing something much darker, cooler and serious (when have we heard that one before?)

What superhero movie are you most excited for this summer? “The Wolverine”? No, I thought not. Between “Iron Man 3” and the forthcoming “Man of Steel”, along with a slew of non-super block-busters, the sixth X-Men movie and do-over of 2009's “X-Men Origins: Wolverine” has been struggling a little to make its way into our collective consciousness. But never fear: we are here to change that.

WHAT ARREST? Is the phrase Reese Witherspoon is likely hoping people will soon be saying as America's (former?) sweetheart bounces back from her embarrassing arrest (she's human, who knew?) by lining up project after project. Last week she booked both the sci-fi "Passengers" and the comedy thing "Depth Of Field," and now she's adding some prestige sauce on top of her mix of never-ending, developing projects.

The Wolverine Logan Viper
It's one of those mornings. Super hero spoilers left and right! Oh no, what will you do? While there's no shortage of blogs telling you the second a "Wolverine" trailer will appear weeks in advance, aside from new photos this morning, there haven't been a ton of marketing materials on the Hugh Jackman-starring super hero film as of yet. At least, certainly not any video. That's changing fast.

In the early months of promoting a big-budget film, parties involved usually make a play towards reaching diehards first, making their film seem like a boutique item to the devoted. This sort of fan service feeds the few who are credited with starting the “buzz” on a film before a trailer is released to the general public, at which point regular moviegoers can judge it for themselves. In recent years, some studios have turned this into high art, with filmmakers delivering pre-planned soundbites during shooting, teasing footage during public appearances, and even heading online to be ready for fans’ inquiries as sort of a cheerleader for their own work. It’s created an odd intimacy with fans not just in the filmmaking stages, but in the promotional exchanges as well. And while it can do much to stoke excitement and anticipation for an upcoming film, can this sort of marketing technique backfire?

Though its release date is only a few months away, James Mangold's summer tentpole “The Wolverine” has yet to boast a trailer (a fact likely to be remedied soon). There are a ton of images and descriptions to satiate fans in the meantime, but now, rather than just unveil another sneak peek at the film, the director has revealed a few of his key pieces of inspiration for the project, and they are intriguing.

Marketing cycles for movies, especially for big summer blockbusters, are usually planned long in advance, with clear stages and expectations. But in 2013 there are at least two big, upcoming movies that are yet to really show their faces. The biggest absence thus far is "The Hangover Part III" which hasn't even shown a teaser trailer or poster yet, despite being set for release in three months. And coming in second, with a date set for five months away, is "The Wolverine." But you expect more soon. A lot more...

With the film due this summer, and still no trailer, the only thing we have to go by on "The Wolverine" thus far is a handful of images and quotes from a few interviews. Rumors of various characters from the "X-Men" films popping up have been percolating (Hugh Jackman has made the tease himself, with Famke Janssen's Jean Grey being the leading candidate), but we'll just have to wait and see. But director James Mangold did sit down recently with EW to talk about the movie, and shed a bit more light on the Logan we'll be seeing this time around.

"It's 100 percent undiluted Wolverine," director James Mangold (the very underrated "3:10 To Yuma") said in yesterday's Live Chat about 20th Century Fox's "The Wolverine." An interesting, surprisingly informative and thoughtful conversation between Mangold and his star Hugh Jackman, while the duo were in part-salesman mode -- letting the geek constituents hear what they wanted to hear -- the hopeful point of the discussion seemed to be selling fans on everything "The Wolverine" isn't.

Things in the movie world don't happen in a vacuum, and with James Mangold and Hugh Jackman taking part in an online Q&A today, followed by an unveiling of a new teaser poster for "The Wolverine," it's probably a safe bet some kind of teaser trailer will be dropping later this week. But you gotta start somewhere...
