Liam Neeson, Non-Stop
Since 2009's surprise hit "Taken," Liam Neeson, an actor formerly known for his serious performances in things like "Schindler's List" and "Michael Collins," has taken up residence as a go-to action icon. In the last few years he's been "Taken" twice (with a third installment on the way), battled a nasty nest of aquatic aliens in "Battleship," and been mercilessly hunted by a pack of wild wolves in the admirably grim "The Grey." With his massive frame and his gravelly voice that sounds like he's continually just finished off several dozen cigarettes, he's the rare action star who actually seems like he could handle the preposterous situations he's dealt. And in his latest thriller, "Non-Stop," that situation is pretty preposterous indeed: this time the star is cast as an alcoholic air marshal accused of hijacking a transatlantic flight. Thankfully, no wolves are on the plane.

Well, that's funny. Just last night we reported that indie filmmakers The Polish Brothers were offered, and turned down, the chance to direct Warner Bros.' potential franchise "Akira," marking the first real word on the project ever since Albert Hughes bailed on the film at the end of May. Well, if anything, the Polish Brothers tidbit of info revealed that movement was still happening even if it wasn't out in the open, and now a new name is considering stepping into the high profile pic.

That Other Title Was BetterEarlier this spring, Marc Canton, producer of the upcoming "300" sequel "Xerxes" said that a script had been delivered by Zack Snyder and Kurt Johnstad, adding “I feel like it’s gonna happen and we’re close.” Well, they're nearly there and it has a new title.

Director Jaume-Collet Serra is hot hot hot. The "Orphan" helmer has the relatively warmly received thriller "Unknown" hitting theaters this weekend -- a film that seems to be getting a "it's good for what it is" pass from a decent number of critics -- and he recently signed on to direct "Harker," a reimagining of the Dracula for Warner Bros. Additionally, Paramount has also shortlisted the helmer for "G.I. Joe 2" and now one more project is crossing his desk.

Review: 'Unknown' Is Knowing Euro-Trash Fluff (Not Necessarily A Bad Thing)

If you've seen the trailers for "Unknown," then you probably have a pretty good idea of what it's about and what it'll be like: all those quick cuts of car crashes and blue-tinted European scenery; Liam Neeson again assuming the role of grumpily righteous avenger (something he brought a laser-like focus to in the sleeper hit "Taken"); and a number of tired genre clichés trotted out for the masses (mistaken identities, Soviet-era spies, a potential assassination plot).

When it was revealed last month that Stephen Sommers had been quietly removed from the director's chair of "G.I. Joe 2," we figured that a shortlist of contenders would come sooner rather than later. Well, it's been a month and Paramount has apparently got their ducks in a row and have a trio of uh, interesting choices to take over the gig.

Who said vampires were on their way out? Warner Bros. believes there's still more business to be wrung out of pop culture's latest obsession and are quickly moving on a new spin of an old tale.
