The Great Gatsby, Leonardo DiCaprio
Opening a bit bigger than expected this past weekend and getting ready to explode confetti over crowds at Cannes later this week, Baz Luhrmann’s “The Great Gatsby,” starring Leonardo DiCaprio as Gatsby, Carey Mulligan as Daisy and Tobey Maguire as Nick Carraway, is totally ridiculous. It’s a rococo doodle, one full of flash and dazzle and sparkle, but empty inside, which would be an apt metaphor for the titular character if Luhrmann would slow down long enough to establish such things (even if he did bother to try to the make the connection, it would probably be besieged by schizophrenic cutting and accompanied by a Jay-Z song). In fact, it was something of a chore to narrow down the list of the most ridiculous things about “The Great Gatsby” to just five. We could go on and on all day. Oh, and spoiler warning old sport.

It was only a couple of weeks ago that Jay-Z’s role in the music of Baz Luhrmann’s “The Great Gatsby” was clarified. He’s the Soundtrack Executive Producer, and word is starting trickle out on who Hov is bringing with him for the soundtrack of Luhrmann’s flashy adaptation. Hint: He put a ring on it.

When rapper/entrepreneur Jay-Z was reported to be "scoring" Baz Luhrmann's "The Great Gatsby" the first thing we were asked was, why didn't we report this? Well, for one, we're sticklers for language. You wouldn't say Diablo Cody wrote "Evil Dead" if she just did a dialogue pass on it, right? Well, there's that and there's the fact that longtime Luhrmann composer Craig Armstrong was listed as the composer for the movie from the very first (and all subsequent) trailers. So while it sounded nice, it likely wasn't quite right, but of course WB wouldn't comment, so we had to wait. (But yes, Jay-Z and Kanye West's "No Church In The Wild" features in the trailers).

So what does David Fincher do after directing and executive producing a thirteen-hour political drama? He puts on a "Suit & Tie" of course. As we reported not too long ago, Fincher reteamed with his "The Social Network" star Justin Timberlake to helm the video for the first single from the actor's return to music, The 20/20 Experience. And now it has arrived, and it's pretty slick little thing.

It's hard to belive that it was seven years ago when Justin Timberlake dropped FutureSex/LoveSounds, his chart topping sophomore album, but since then the pop star turned actor, lining up parts in a wide range of films from the B-movie sleze of "Black Snake Moan," to the comedies "Bad Teacher" and "Friends With Benefits," to the sci-fi "In Time" and the baseball drama "Trouble With The Curve." And while 2013 will see him appear in the Coen Brothers' "Inside Llewyn Davis," Timberlake is headed back to where he started, with a new album The 20/20 Experience dropping in the spring. And he's roped in the helmer who helped him achieve his finest performance to date, to lens the first video for the album.

"I'ma up at Brooklyn, now I'm down in Tribeca/Right next to De Niro, but I'll be hood forever," Jay-Z raps on "Empire State Of Mind" and certainly the man who grew up in the Marcy Houses is rolling in a new area code, with some considerably more upper crust friends. And while this pairing still seems sort of odd, Shawn Carter is able to grab this kind of talent these days.

Director Romain Gavras is no stranger to helming provocative material, being the man behind M.I.A.'s redhead killing "Born Free" and the helmer of "Notre Jour Viendre" but he's upping the stakes for "No Church In The Wild," the latest single from the team up of Jay-Z and Kanye West.
