George Clooney aside, it's been a strong trend in David O. Russell's career to secure great performances from actors and then continue to bring them back for further projects. The director's latest instance of such is with the Weinstein-backed romantic drama, “The Ends of the Earth,” reteaming with his “Silver Linings Playbook” actress Jennifer Lawrence, and now another previous collaborator is slated to come onboard.

For what it's worth, the ratings for last night's Oscar show look to be up, suggesting that the Academy's gamble with Seth MacFarlane paid off (although, the fact that six of the Best Picture nominations made over $100 million is probably the most significant factors). But creatively, things were a little more mixed, most can agree.

We're less than a week away, and after Sunday night, Oscar talk will be over for another year. Well, until next fall anyway. But there is still plenty of time to honor the nominees, and among them is Jennifer Lawrence, who solidified in 2012 that she has certainly arrived. From her first Oscar nomination two years ago for "Winter's Bone," the actress has exploded with two franchises under her belt ("The Hunger Games," the new "X-Men" films), a new collaborator in "Silver Linings Playbook" director David O. Russell (she just signed on for his next movie) and a promising upcoming slate that includes Susanne Bier's drama "Serena." Too early for a tribute? That's up for debate, but she's already getting the career overview treatment.

Every awards season, there are really only two moments of true suspense during the ceremonies: The reading of the names of the winning film or actor in each category, and the views of the hopeful, pensive faces of those who represent them. Two Best Actress nominees this year will be extra scrutinized as a result of reported “insider squabbling,” but really the occasion has led one of the leading ladies to respond with a level-headed fury.

Life hasn't been too kind lately for Pat Solitano. He's just been released from a court ordered stint in a mental hospital after severly beating the man he caught cheating with his wife. Diagnosed as bipolar with mood swings, Pat has a difficult journey ahead of him but he's optimistic. With a rallying cry of "Excelsior," he believes that you can take "all negativity and make it a silver lining." His outlook is positive and he hopes to rebuild himself to win his wife back who has a restraining order out on him. And so begins David O. Russell's "Silver Linings Playbook," an enormously entertaining, crowd-pleasing winner from the director whose comedic edge has never been sharper.

"The Hunger Games" will be a test of sorts for Jennifer Lawrence. Expectations are running high for the franchise film -- which already has a sequel dated for November 22, 2013 -- and will also be the the first time the young actress is toplining a tentpole. The success of the brewing series will largely depend on if audiences outside the core fanbase will want to go along Katniss' adventures, and that largely rests on Lawrence's shoulders. So as if that pressure wasn't enough, now she's going to show off her singing voice too.

...and then there was one. With Elizabeth Banks, Kirsten Dunst, Blake Lively, Rooney Mara, Rachel McAdams, Andrea Riseborough, Olivia Wilde and Jennifer Lawrence all vying and testing for the coveted female lead role in David O. Russell's "The Silver Linings Playbook," one name has risen above the others. Oscar nominee Jennifer Lawrence seems to have impressed the director where the others have failed, taking the frontrunner position according to Deadline.

By this point, it's more than likely that you've checked out "X-Men: First Class" (although its underwhelming box office suggests that there were fewer of you than we thought). And, if the film's strong exit scores are anything to go by, you, like most of The Playlist team, found it as entertaining a superhero movie as any in the last few years: fresh, exciting and well-directed, with a brace of star-making performances, it's certainly given a much-needed kick up the ass to a franchise that's had two awful entries in a row.
