Review: 'Parker' Is A Visually Indistinguishable, Punishingly Violent, And Painfully Inert Pulp Trifle

The character of Parker is one of those icons of hard-boiled pulp fiction – a smart alecky bruiser created by legendary novelist Donald Westlake (under his Richard Stark nom de plume), who appeared in over a dozen novels, a handful of cinematic adaptations (most notably portrayed by Lee Marvin in "Point Blank"), and a number of cross-media platforms (like the recent beautifully realized comic books written and drawn by Darwyn Cooke). In the novels, Parker wasn't a superhero – he was a criminal who would take a beating or bite a bullet but keep on chugging; an unstoppable everyman.

If you're a professional thief, living outside the law, you'd think that if you're going to wear a disguise it would be more than putting on a pair of glasses or wearing a cowboy hat. But then again, when it comes to Jason Statham, he breaks all the rules. The first trailer for "Parker" is here and well...it's a Jason Statham movie.

You gotta hand it to Summit. It seems they don't fear Gotham's reckoning nor the comedy powers of Vince Vaughn and Ben Stiller, as at the end of the month, they'll be dropping "Step Up Revolution," the fourth entry in the surprisingly still-running franchise in which teenagers solve their problems through the power of dance. And while the budgets might have gotten smaller, the music department still seems to have the same latitude to spend.

You know, this was going to be a snarkier post but then we dug up this set photo of Jason Statham wearing a goddamn cowboy hat, and "Parker" is now our most anticipated movie of 2013. Jason Statham has done a lot things in his career -- most of them variations on the same theme -- but we have never seen him wear a ten gallon hat, and dude pulls it off. If the rest of his warddrobe for "Parker" is this outlandish, we simply can't wait.

Discuss: Is This New 'What To Expect When You're Expecting' Trailer Going To Bring In The Dudes?

Starring Cameron Diaz, Jennifer Lopez, Elizabeth Banks, Brooklyn Decker, Anna Kendrick, Chris Rock, Dennis Quaid, Genesis Rodriguez, Megan Mullally, Wendi McLendon-Covey ("Bridesmaids"), Rodrigo Santoro, Chace Crawford, Rob Huebel ("Human Giant"), Thomas Lennon ("A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas"), Joe Manganiello, and more, the new pregnancy comedy, "What To Expect When You're Expecting" often looks like the catch-all, all-things-to-everyone style comedy. And/or a bit like the holiday comedies of late, "New Year's Eve" and "Valentine's Day," which use the formula of dozens of celebrity actors big and small, shake and stir and hope that it all makes sense in the end. The marketing for the films has thus far insulted intelligence -- look at these awesome/awful posters -- however, it's also geared at triggering that "I can relate with that! ha!" response.

Somewhere along the way during the press circuit for "Tower Heist" last fall, Brett Ratner's brain malfunctioned. In a string of high publicized incidents, the director managed to brag about banging Olivia Munn, tell a Q&A audience that rehearsals were for "fags" before going on "The Howard Stern Show" and giving a no holds barred account of: his sperm count; how condoms strangle his cock; throwing baloney on a girl's ass; his preference for how vaginas are groomed; how he sends a woman to his doctor before he sleeps with them; and a detailed account of the time he was caught screwing a Victoria Secret's model only to be walked in on by his then girlfriend Lindsay Lohan. We're not making this up (listen to it here). Needless to say, he got in all kinds of hot water and had to step down as producer of the Oscars. But Ratner is plotting his comeback trail.

With "Contraband" hitting theaters this weekend, Mark Wahlberg is out doing the rounds with the press, and he's game for talking about anything. And to his credit, he's got a lot to talk about. The actor has a laundry list of projects in the works at any given moment. And one that has been moving in fits and starts for the past little while is "Cocaine Cowboys," but according to Wahlberg, it could be lensing as early as this summer and not only that, a pretty big name is already looking for a role.

'Where In The World Is Carmen Sandiego?' Apparently On Jennifer Lopez's Block

If you were a child of the '80s, you likely spent some time with "Where in the World Is Carmen Sandiego?" the first in a series of best-selling, educational and actually pretty entertaining video games that mixed history and geography in the guise of a spyhunt. The basic premise was that you had to catch the dastardly Carmen Sandiego and her V.I.L.E. henchmen by answering a bunch of clues about the locations in the world where they could be hiding. The video game was eventually turned into the awesome '90s kids educational game show, and of course Hollywood came knocking. Disney tried to do something with the property in the '90s with Sandra Bullock but it never went anywhere, but now someone different is gonna ruin another childhood staple.

Jennifer Lopez is at a bizarre crossroads in her career, where she's currently famous for formerly being a superstar, because at any rate, no one wants to see her in movies or listen to her music. Her last few efforts on the big screen -- "The Back-Up Plan," "El cantate" and "Bordertown" -- were outright duds. While on the music fromt, despite having a hit single with "On The Floor," no one bought her album "Love?" with only 183,000 copies sold to date a far cry from her previous effort "Brave" (650,000 copies) and leagues away from the era when she was moving units in the millions. But that being said, she's still a brand, an "American Idol" host and a hugely influential and popular figure in the Latino community and above all, there is still a curiosity factor about Jenny from the block that for whatever reason piques the pop culture mind. But movie execs are dumb, and while Lopez is getting another shot at a couple of upcoming movies, she will not be toplining as she did back in her "Maid In Manhattan"/"The Wedding Planner" days.
