Think Like A Man Too
Every trade will tell you the success of “Think Like A Man Too” is because of social media buzz. I just thought it was a little guy named Kevin Hart and an audience that is constantly underserved. I’m going to go with the latter. Hart is one of the biggest African-American stars in the world right now (minus mega-star Will Smith) and the urban audience has a movie squarely aimed at them maybe every two months at best, so they usually turn out for comedy starring one of their own. And so as expected “Think Like A Man Too” took the number one spot at the box-office this weekend, but not by a lot.

Review: Clint Eastwood’s ‘Jersey Boys’ A Classy Yet Clumsy Transfer From Stage To Screen

Jersey Boys,
An odd thing happens when Clint Eastwood approaches music. As if befitting the practical authority that the actor/director himself holds, each use of it somehow simply simmers rather than sparks. His 1988 biopic “Bird”—while an ambitious change of pace—sapped Charlie Parker’s tunes of energy or space, and left Forest Whitaker to a rather muted portrayal of the man. Twenty-six years later, Broadway has already done the work for Eastwood: “Jersey Boys” is wall-to-wall fantasyland showbiz, expertly shot and boasting fine performances, but it is in the spirit world between stage and screen where it loses its footing.

Jersey Boys,
Music has always been a big part of Clint Eastwood's career, with the filmmaker also serving as composer and songwriter for a strong handful of his films, yet he's never actually made a musical. Outside of the biopic "Bird" and an episode of the PBS series "The Blues," Eastwood has never really had the chance to dig elbows deep into movie with wall-to-wall music, but now the director who seems to have done it all, will cross the genre off his bucket list.

Tammy, Melisa McCarthy
In case you missed it, Redbox revealed their top 10 most rented titles of 2013 on Christmas Eve, and two films from comedian Melissa McCarthy, "The Heat" and "Identity Thief," nabbed the top two slots. Not too shabby. Plus now you know what the rest of the country does when they rent movies. Suffice to say the "Bridesmaids" breakout actress has become a bona fide star in her own right.

How long can you wait for the next directorial effort from Ben Affleck? Moreover, how long can Warner Bros. wait? Well, it would appear they're erring on giving the Oscar winning actor/director as much time as possible rather than trying to rush him into a release date.

Who would have thought that after “Paint Your Wagon” Clint Eastwood would ever return to the realm of musicals? The legendary squinty-eyed actor turned director has been setting his sights on bringing the Broadway hit “Jersey Boys” to the big screen for some time. Now it looks as if Eastwood has finally filled one of the roles.

Given that "Les Miersables" has provided studios $430 million reasons to start putting musicals in development, it may be surprising that there hasn't really been much movement on that front. Well, that's because the genre tends to be expensive, and for every "Les Miserables" there's something like "Nine," a big, gaudy disappointment. But an established property certainly helps things move along, and it looks like "Jersey Boys" -- put into turnaround last fall at Warner Bros. -- may still be alive with a pretty big name kicking the tires.

How are studios making their decisions these days? Very, very carefully. That's certainly true over at Warner Bros. who this year alone have iced "Akira," are moving very tentatively on "Arthur & Lancelot" (which seems to be on hold), passed on the sprawling "The Dark Tower" and let go of "The Imitation Game." And now they are sending a hit musical packing as well. Jon Favreau's "Jersey Boys" has been put into turnaround.

While the modern movie musical has been an unpredictable mixed bag ("Mamma Mia!" a hit, but retro "Rock Of Ages" and classic-feeling "Nine" flopped), it seems Hollywood still thinks there is money to be had. And they are hoping stage success can translate to movie audiences (though again, that didn't mean a thing for "Rock Of Ages").

Ever since "Cowboys & Aliens" kinda tanked hard last summer, there haven't been many directorial projects linked to Jon Favreau. Aside from the brewing "Magic Kingdom" (which itself seems to have stalled out), Favreau kept busy directing the pilot for the J.J. Abrams produced series "Revolution" and taking on a few acting gigs in "Iron Man 3," "Identity Thief" and the forthcoming "People Like Us." But it looks like another supersize project could be his if it all works out.
