Given that "Les Miersables" has provided studios $430 million reasons to start putting musicals in development, it may be surprising that there hasn't really been much movement on that front. Well, that's because the genre tends to be expensive, and for every "Les Miserables" there's something like "Nine," a big, gaudy disappointment. But an established property certainly helps things move along, and it looks like "Jersey Boys" -- put into turnaround last fall at Warner Bros. -- may still be alive with a pretty big name kicking the tires.

How are studios making their decisions these days? Very, very carefully. That's certainly true over at Warner Bros. who this year alone have iced "Akira," are moving very tentatively on "Arthur & Lancelot" (which seems to be on hold), passed on the sprawling "The Dark Tower" and let go of "The Imitation Game." And now they are sending a hit musical packing as well. Jon Favreau's "Jersey Boys" has been put into turnaround.

While the modern movie musical has been an unpredictable mixed bag ("Mamma Mia!" a hit, but retro "Rock Of Ages" and classic-feeling "Nine" flopped), it seems Hollywood still thinks there is money to be had. And they are hoping stage success can translate to movie audiences (though again, that didn't mean a thing for "Rock Of Ages").

Ever since "Cowboys & Aliens" kinda tanked hard last summer, there haven't been many directorial projects linked to Jon Favreau. Aside from the brewing "Magic Kingdom" (which itself seems to have stalled out), Favreau kept busy directing the pilot for the J.J. Abrams produced series "Revolution" and taking on a few acting gigs in "Iron Man 3," "Identity Thief" and the forthcoming "People Like Us." But it looks like another supersize project could be his if it all works out.

For a man whose first big-screen credit came with the Dina Meyer-starring B-movie "Bats," John Logan isn't doing too shabbily.  Thanks to script work on "Any Given Sunday" and "Gladiator," he's been one of Hollywood's most in-demand writers for a decade, winning a second Oscar nomination for Martin Scorsese's "The Aviator." And, off the back of his Tony-winning play "Red," had a banner year in 2011, with his name stamped on Ralph Fiennes' "Coriolanus," Gore Verbinski's "Rango" and Scorsese's "Hugo," the latter two of which look set to win him further awards plaudits.
