Young & Beautiful
Coming of age and prostitution blend together in the latest from François Ozon ("Swimming Pool," "8 Women"), a provocative drama that unspooled at the Cannes Film Festival last year. And after a stint on the festival circuit, "Young & Beautiful" is heading to U.S. theatres, and a new trailer has arrived.

This year, the Marrakech Film Festival, with the highest-profile jury it has ever boasted and a Scandinavian tribute that brought some of the most exciting international filmmakers to town too, was heaving with ingenues and rising stars. But one of the pleasures of this festival has always been the opportunity it affords to get to meet with some of the more established, classic actors of our time—last year we enjoyed a riotous interview with Terence Stamp, for example—and this year was no exception as we got to sit down with Charlotte Rampling, whose fascinating and unique presence has been gracing our screens since the mid-sixties.

Director Francois Ozon’s latest film, “Jeune Et Jolie” (“Young and Beautiful”) made its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in May. Our own Kevin Jagernauth wasn’t too impressed, giving it a “C” partially because of Ozon’s underwhelming narrative that uses “a young woman’s risk-filled sexual awakening as an illustration of coming-of-age, while also demanding a realism from a situation that he keeps far from being rationalized and justified.” Although it has yet to grace our shores, the film’s soundtrack has been revealed.

"No one's serious at seventeen," goes a line from Rimbaud's poem of the same name, and it's just one of a handful of confused messages in Francois Ozon's "Jeune Et Jolie (Young And Beautiful)," a flesh-filled exploration of teenage sexuality. Ozon, no stranger to provocative imagery, takes off the rose-colored glasses for his look at youthful dalliances and coming-of-age. Indeed, there is nary a sexual experience or conversation within the film that isn't marked by some kind of confusion, pain or absence of feeling, with "Jeune Et Joli" either the profile of a single wayward youth or a declaration that sex has devolved into a crude transaction.
