Joe Eszterhas Turns His Scary Encounter With Mel Gibson Into An eBook 'Heaven And Mel'

The last credit Joe Eszterhas has for screenplay work is in 2006, for the Hungarian film "Children Of Glory" (he also got his name on "Basic Instinct 2" for creating the characters). And while he made brief headlines last year when his new script "Lust" got music video helmer Hype Williams attached, nothing has been heard since. In fact, he's now most famous for being on the unfortunate end of a Mel Gibson tirade, one that he used to help boost the profile of The Wrap who breathlessly and desperate wrung every drop out of the story (and of course, reported on this). And now, he's written a 30,000 word book about the ordeal. We're not fucking kidding.

Yesterday afternoon, it was reported that Mel Gibson's Jewish epic about Maccabee, the man who led a Jewish revolt against the Greek-Syrian armies that conquered Judea in the second century B.C., was put on hold at Warner Bros. because the script by Joe Eszterhas ("Basic Instinct," "Jade") wasn't working. And then things got ugly. The Wrap posted a scathing nine-page letter the screenwriter had privately sent Gibson, and it's an eye-melting read, giving a first-hand account of the actor/director's rage and, more troublingly, his apparent unwavering anti-Semitism. Deadline got in the game with a statement from Gibson that calmly denied the charges. So it's Eszterhas vs. Gibson, and both stories are wildly different, and we'd reckon as these things usually go, the truth stands somewhere in the middle. So let's break it down...

"Hey, let's give Mel Gibson a bunch of money to make a period based, swords-and-sandals epic about a pivotal moment in Jewish history!"....that's not a sentence you'll be hearing at Warner Bros. now or probably anytime soon, as the studio has put the brewing epic movie on hold. Can't say we're shocked.

We Still Wish He'd Do That Viking Movie We've heard about actors or filmmakers trying to do some course correction to rejuvenate or repair their ailing career, but this is ridiculous. Deadline is reporting that Mel Gibson has teamed up with Joe Eszterhas to produce and potentially direct a script about revolutionary Jewish historical figure Judah Maccabee, to be produced under his Icon shingle and released by Warner Bros. Screenwriter Joe Eszterhas Returns With 'Lust' In His Heart

There was a time -- quite a long time ago -- when Joe Eszterhas was one of the biggest screenwriting names around town. He made his name with "Flashdance" and "Jagged Edge" and exploded into the stratosphere with "Basic Instinct" which soon saw him commanding millions for his work. But with disappointments in follow-ups "Jade" (which is now mostly known for being a punchline in "40 Year Old Virgin") and "Sliver" and the colossal bomb that was "Showgirls," Eszterhas packed his bags and left Hollywood. And while he may not be in Tinseltown anymore, the movie bug struck and he's got a new script that will mark his comeback vehicle, and no surprise he's drawn up another sexual thriller, a genre he's more than familiar with.
