It seemed improbable that arthouse fave Alejandro González Iñárritu would tackle a big studio tentpole, but last month that seemed to be the case when reports surfaced he was circling "The Jungle Book" at Warner Bros. But indeed, Iñárrituu won't be going blockbuster any time soon as he's bounced from the project, leaving Warner Bros. to find another director for the Callie Kloves-penned take on the public domain material.

Kicking around since 2011, biopic “Gotti” (aka “Gotti: In The Shadow Of My Father” aka “Gotti: Three Generations”) was originally set to be directed by Barry Levinson with a cast that included John Travolta as Gotti Sr. alongside Al Pacino, Ben Foster and Joe Pesci, among others. Of course that never came to pass -- mostly due to legal and money problems -- but now things look to finally be set for some real movement on the film with a new director announced.

While it remains to be seen if Joe Johnston will return to the director's chair for the inevitable sequel to "Captain America: The First Avengers" -- which according to Neal McDonough (aka Dum Dum Dugan) may shoot at the end of the year -- the helmer is taking a microbudget project that he can knock out fast, should he need to jump back into comic book land.

Before Joe Johnston became a filmmaker in his own right, he spent years learning the tricks of the trade by working under George Lucas on the director's celebrated early projects. As a concept artist and effects technician, Johnston worked on the original "Star Wars" trilogy and later parlayed those skills into an Oscar for Best Visual Effects for "Raiders Of The Lost Ark" directed by Steven Spielberg and produced by Lucas. It has been over a decade since Johnson last collaborated on a Lucas-related project -- he co-directed "The Adventures of Young Indiana Jones: Spring Break Adventure" back in 1999 -- but it looks like he's been trying to get something the fanboys would love off the ground at LucasFilm.

Hey, "Captain America" is coming out! We have to confess we'd kind of forgotten about the film: Marvel and Paramount haven't yet been saturation marketing the flick in the same way that other superhero blockbusters have been ("X-Men First Class," you were pretty good, but there was really no need for all those posters, now, was there?). Whether it's a lack of confidence in the movie, or more realistically, that the film still isn't out for another seven weeks, things seem to be gearing up again.

In Semi-Related News, Sun Rises In East, Sets In WestBit by bit, we're moving towards the hugely ambitious endgame of the first wave of Marvel's self-produced pictures. We've had two "Iron Man" films and an "Incredible Hulk," and they're soon to be joined by "Thor" (look out for our review coming in the next 24 hours) and "Captain America: The First Avenger," while "The Avengers," the Joss Whedon-helmed epic that'll team the heroes of all four franchises, starts filming this very day, ahead of its release a year from now.

While we've made it pretty clear that "X-Men: First Class" is the best looking comic book film of the summer, we'll definitely give "Captain America: The First Avenger" a firm second place (sorry "Green Lantern" and "Thor," you both look too dorky to place). The Super Bowl teaser was a surprising amount of fun and while we await a full length trailer -- pretty lame "descriptions" have been floating around if that wets your dock --- we have a new peek at the villain.

Marvel's promotional engine for "Captain America: The First Avenger" is beginning to kick into high gear with a new poster, and the implication that this film is also serving as an advertisement for 2012's "The Avengers." How else to explain the complete absence of Captain America's name in favor of the "Avenge" tagline? Marvel's been gunshy about using 'America' in conjunction with the marketing, but, c'mon, this is a seventy year old character that remains popular today. Given what we know of the plot - Cap and Bucky teaming to stop the Red Skull from retrieving the magical Cosmic Cube - what exactly is being avenged?
