The hype generator surrounding Universal’s pricey remake/reimagining/whatever of John Carpenter’s 1982 chiller “The Thing” (itself a remake of 1951’s “The Thing From Another World”) has been on the fritz lately. We first got a fairly impressive look at the movie way back at last year’s New York Comic Con. At that point the film was scheduled for an April 29th, 2011 bow, before getting pushed back considerably to the more Halloween-friendly slot of October 14th, 2011. While this new release date is right around the corner, only one trailer and a single mysterious poster for the flick had surfaced in recent months (though we’re just happy it’s a Halloween release that doesn’t feature home video footage of ghosts). Well, the hype generator seems to have been reengaged, with MTV (via Coming Soon) debuting the first stand alone clip from the movie.

Also Has No Reservations About Tackling Tom Buchanan In Baz Luhrmann's 'The Great Gatsby'Swinging and punching its way into theaters this weekend is “Warrior,” a tale of two estranged brothers who find themselves reunited in the MMA (that is, Mixed Martial Arts) ring. As to be expected, much of the screentime of the two leads, Joel Edgerton (playing the older brother, Brendan) and Tom Hardy (as the younger, Tommy), involves skillfully busting their co-stars up as they make their way through the ranks of a championship tournament to eventually face one another for the ultimate prize: a very large check both could use. We recently had the chance to sit down with Edgerton and talk about playing a big guy with a big heart, as well as the preparation it took to go up against his co-stars, who (besides himself and Hardy) were all MMA fighters professionally.

It has been a pretty remarkable past couple of years for Australian actor Joel Edgerton. While he made his first tentative steps in Hollywood with a role in a couple of the "Star Wars" prequels, "King Arthur" and "Smokin' Aces," it would be the movies he made as part of his Blue-Tongue Films collective that would raise his profile. "The Square" and "Animal Kingdom" were both breakout films and since then, Edgerton has never been busier. He's got a wide variety of roles on his plate with the horror remake "The Thing," the fantasy "The Odd Life of Timothy Green" and the MMA drama "Warrior" all set to hit theaters, with roles in Kathryn Bigelow's Mark Boal-scribed untitled black-ops thriller (aka "Kill Bin Laden") and Baz Luhrmann's "The Great Gatsby" in the works. In short, the actor is on the cusp of becoming a household name and a familiar face.

Empire Big Screen '11 Review: 'Warrior' Is Silly, Over-Familiar & Enormously Effective

Considering that it's the fastest rising sport in the world and that it's inherently cinematic in a way that, say, baseball isn't, it's surprising that Hollywood hasn't made greater hay out of mixed martial arts (or MMA). For the newcomer, it's essentially a blend of boxing, wrestling and a good old bar fight, a mix you would have thought would have led to far more movie outings than David Mamet's "Redbelt" and next year's Kevin James (yes, Kevin James) vehicle "Here Comes the Boom." But a movie opening next month, Gavin O'Connor's "Warrior," which we caught today as the first surprise public screening at Empire Big Screen in London, is planting its feet firmly in the cage, and it's taking two of the fastest rising stars in town, "Inception" 's Tom Hardy and "Animal Kingdom" 's Joel Edgerton, in with it.

Is Blue Tongue Films stalwart Kieran Darcy-Smith counting his lucky stars or what? While his directorial debut (previously going by "Say Nothing") was in production, the stock of two of his leading thespians -- Joel Edgerton and Teresa Palmer -- have risen astronomically which is sure to throw his film right into the spotlight.

The anointment of Joel Edgerton as a freshly minted A-lister looks to be complete. The Australian actor seemed to be on the brink of something for a decade, but 2011 may be the year in which the stars align: his small, but pivotal role in "Animal Kingdom" last year kicked off a string of new gigs, including the male lead in the prequel/reboot/preboot of "The Thing," opposite Mary Elizabeth Winstead, the co-lead opposite Jennifer Garner in "The Odd Life of Timothy Green," and starring across from Tom Hardy in MMA drama "Warrior," a film that's picked up major buzz from early screenings, with some even whispering that it could be an awards contender.

The list of go-to names for big roles, particularly for male leads, is an ever-changing one. We ran down a list last year, but even in the few months since then, new names have come to the forefront, and some have jumped to the front of the queue. "Thor" star Chris Hemsworth, for instance, who just locked down the title role opposite Kristen Stewart in "Snow White and the Huntsman," is a newbie, while his co-star in the forthcoming film, "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides" romantic lead Sam Clafin, not only bagged the prince part in the fairy tale, but also the lead in would-be-'Harry Potter'-replacement franchise "The Seventh Son," with Jeff Bridges and Julianne Moore.

But Will The Events Of Last Night Scupper The Project?Update: Variety reports that the Bigelow/Boal team will now include the 40-minute firefight that killed Osama Bin Laden. Boal, a former investigative reporter, continues to research and uses his resources to build the script, but casting is apparently gearing up with a summer shoot being eyed. And with Bin Laden's death now factoring into the story, financing will apparently come together much more easily.
