Battlefield Tested: New 'RoboCop' Reboot Reveals Its First Viral Clip

Not due in theaters until August 9, 2013, Columbia and MGM Pictures is not wasting any time getting the promotional ball rolling, especially with Comic-Con 2012 right around the corner. The company has already begun a viral campaign for their rebooted version of "RoboCop" starring AMC's "The Killing" actor Joel Kinnaman (also the star of the upcoming foreign-language thriller "Easy Money"). Set in a In a crime-ridden future where a fatally wounded cop (Kinnaman) returns to the force as a powerful cyborg with submerged memories haunting him, this initial "RoboCop" viral clip centers around OmniCorp, the company in the original picture that's building a future-age of law enforcement. This clip introduces the "battlefield tested" ED-209 design. Here's the company's manifesto.

It has been a pretty good 2012 for Daniel Espinosa. The director made his Hollywood debut with the action flick "Safe House" starring Ryan Reynolds and Denzel Washington, and the R-rated movie exceeded expectations, taking more than $120 million at the U.S. box office on it's way to more than $200 million worldwide. So what does he get for an encore? How about Martin Scorsese presenting the stateside debut of the film that got you the attention of the industry in the first place?

Greta Gerwig and Joel Kinnaman -- two actors who have been working mostly in indie/foreign fare to date -- are making big strides toward more mainstream recognition. The former already did the WB comedy "Arthur" last year with Russell Brand, and later this year, she'll feature in Woody Allen's "Nero Fiddled" and is currently lensing the HBO series "The Corrections" with Noah Baumbach. As for the latter, he's on the AMC series "The Killing," featured in the climactic showdown in "Safe House" and was just named MGM's "RoboCop." But this summer, they'll both appear in the Fox Searchlight romantic drama/comedy "Lola Versus."

Joining the ranks of Peter Weller, Robert John Burke ("RoboCop 3"), Richard Eden (the shortlived Canadian TV series), David Sobolov (the animated series "RoboCop: Alpha Commando") and Page Fletcher (the mini-series "RoboCop: Prime Directives"), Joel Kinnaman is now the latest actor to put on the metal helmet as Deadline confirms he will be the next RoboCop in the upcoming reboot.

So much for those rumors of Michael Fassbender or Russell Crowe (the latter of which was recently debunked anyhow). It looks like neither of those two stars will be leading the new “RoboCop” remake that Brazilian helmer José Padilha (“Elite Squad”) will be directing.

With the year winding down, it looks like executives at Warner Bros. have been looking at the year ahead and wondering WTF have they greenlit. Just yesterday word arrived that they were putting Alex Proyas' expensive, 3D, motion-capture adaptation of "Paradise Lost" on hold to get the budget and script under control. And now, another high profile movie may be getting the axe altogether.
